Default timing ? on d16z6

I'm trying to set the timing on my d16z6 that I'm swapping in, but I don't have the plastic timing covers on the engine, I can set the crank by the key and the mark on the oil pump, but for the cam gear, is there any way to set that without the timing mark on the plastic cover?

yes line the lower crank gear with the timing mark on the block. for the cam gear there are several marks on it there should be and arrow or just the word up stamped on the gear that points up then there will be a dashs one on the left and one on the right of the cam gear they get alligned with the deck of the head

in my service manual it says that for the b7 you can line up the horizontal marks, but for the z6 you should line it up with the timing cover mark, and says nothing regarding the horizontal marks, and shows them to be slightly not horizontal when lined up with the timing mark. this is why i'm confused, and everything i've looked at so far hasn't helped.

your over anilizing this. Yes you do use the 2 horizontal marks on the timing gear and the "up" mark so you have a point of ref. line the 2 horizontal marks level in relation to the top of the head. The up mark will not be pointing straight up it will be tilted a little bit this is okay and the way it should look
