Default Timing belt/waterpump

Anyone got tips and advice? I'll be doing this soon and seems like it'll be a pain in the ***.

I've taken all the valve cover bolts off, but the valve cover won't budge. Tapped it with a mallet, no dice. I got it up about .5 in, but the back side won't go up.

That's just one of the many problems I've got so far

lol.. but check the lil pieces of metal spacers where the 10mm nuts bolt onto. over the grommets. those sometimes bind with the stud.

They come off? Lol I thought they are supposed to be attached to the valve cover. I pried at them, couldn't get them off.

Then there's the crank pulley bolt, not really looking forward to getting that SOB off.

Air gun is your friend.

Money is not my friend.

I have neither a compressor nor air tools. Would an electric impact wrench do the job?

You will have a REAL hard time getting that crank pulley bolt off without an impact air gun

Ok dude i just did this and broke a impact socket and a 1/2 snap on extension.

You will need this to get the bolt off.
http://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-648.../dp/B0000TMLWQ

I have 3 impacts that are 1/2 and one of them will do it. I took a big *** pair of channel locks wrapped the belt around the balancer and let it rest on the frame(strap wrench works better). I took 2 1/2drive extensions just enough to reach past the bumper and rest them on a jack stand. Get a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a long piece of pipe and put pressure on it. Do not bounce!!

Best bet is to get that tool from amazon its the cheapest i have found it. If you are limited on money you wont have any of this stuff i noted. It took me an hour to get mine broke loose. wd40 or any other stuff like this will not help.

Once you get everything off and access to your timing belt and W. pump remove it all make sure your at TDC. After you replace your water pump make sure there is no antifreeze on the block or anywhere the t.belt can touch as antifreeze and timing belts are enemies. Need more help pm me i just did my wifes d17 a few weeks ago.

i got a good matco gun so it breaks it easy. but when i didnt have a impact gun
i tried this method.
if you can get a hold of a chain locking vice grips

chain it tight around the pulley try to not mess up the guides
for the belts as much
and break off the bolt the vice grips handle should/will hold up against
the frame or the strut rod. cant remember but it work for me.

use that chain wrench and wrap an old belt around pulley first no damage can be done like this.

Holy crap this is hard. I've been working on it for 1 hour, and no dice. 5th gear, someone stomping on the brakes, it's still moving around.

Does that chain wrench thing work for sure? I don't have $30 to throw around, if it's definitely gonna work then it might be worth it

yes chain wrench, get #1 at TDC and wrap one of your belts around the pulley. Find a good stiff place to find a spot for the wrench to hold once you lock it down. Add enough 1/2drive extensions to get you to the bumper, put a jack stand underneath it, use a 1/2 drive breaker bar and a pipe and put some good torque down on it and break her away..

Good stuff. I think I got half a turn on it before the socket cracked open.

Why is the #1 at TDC needed? Am I supposed to do this before I take off the crank pulley? I thought I only do that when I'm about to put the new belt on...

no do it before you take the pulley off. You want the crank and cam to stay aligned.. IF not then you can take a chance at messing valves up once you try to fix it later. Remember Honda engines ARE "INTERFERENCE" Engines.

BTW i also broke a socket and an extension.
