Camshaft/Timing Belt Questions
my d16 SOHC is nearing the 80k mark and i just wanted to change my timing belt and water pump. will i need to take off my valve cover for this? or can it be done with the cover on? the reason i ask this is that if i need to take off the valve cover, i might go ahead and buy those zex camshafts i've been lookin at so that i can install them while i'm changin my timing belt.
oh yea, about how much should it cost for the socket wrench to get the bolt off of the crankshaft pulley? is this tool more/less effective than just using a standard socket wrench with a breaker bar? thanks alot guys

yes, you will need to take off the valve cover..but that only takes 3 minutes...installing a cam is a lil more extensive than that.

just did all the above about a month ago. Like drag said installing a camshaft is a lot more than you think. as far as the crankshaft pulley bolt, i tried for 3 days with breaker bar, screwdriver in flywheel, and impact gun and couldn't break it loose. bought the moroso crankshaft pulley remover from summit racing for $70. Worked on the first time. Use a 17mm socket with extensions to extend the breaker bar out past the wheel well and use a jackstand to hold it up.

.. or.. if you have an air compressor.. get an impact gun..
this would be a good time to swap out the cam... since you are working on the head anyway...

Re: Camshaft/Timing Belt Questions (Crazydave)
thanks for all the replys guys. i expect to spend alotta time installing the camshaft, but at least i have only one to put in. how hard should this be? i mean, if i take my time and follow the repair manual or instructions, i should be able to finish it rite?
and i think that the zex cam comes with an adjustable sprocket. since i dont have access to a dyno rite now, i shoudl jsut leave the sprocket at zero rite? and anyone who is sellin any camshaft for the d16z6, feel free to drop me a line. thanks again

Re: Camshaft/Timing Belt Questions
oh yea, what is the main difference between the crankshaft pulley wrench and using extensions and a breaker bar on a socket wrench? in the pics i've seen, the pulley wrench just looks like single piece socket wrench with a longer handle. is there something i'm missing or not seeing? thanks alot.

The Moroso wrench fits inside the hex portion of your crank pulley. You still need to use a socket, breaker bar and a piece of pipe to get the bolt off. Some people do not have the Moroso tool, so they elect to do other things, such as locking the flywheel or using a strap wrench on the outside the crank pulley.

i would also suggest getting a timing light to adjust the timing back to factory specs when reinstalling the cam.

Re: Camshaft/Timing Belt Questions
speaking of reinstalling the cam, i was reading through some instructions on cam removal and installation at c-speed's website and during the procedure they say to pull the timing belt off of the cam gears so that you will be able to access and remove the old camshafts. can this be done without loosening the tensioner? if so, then couldnt i just take out my timing belt from the top to bottom while changing my cams and not have to deal with the crankshaft pulley bolt? or is there something i'm still missing? thanks alot guys. i appreciate all the help u've been giving
