Default oil temperature senders

I'd like to intall an oil temperature gauge into my car at some point and as I'm changing the oil soon it seems like a good time to fit the sender. I've read people talking about senders/sensors fitted into the stock drain hole in the sump. Am I imaging things ? If this is the case where can I get one from ? I understand that this may not be the best place to measure the temp from but I'd just like to know when things are nicly warm before taking it to 7,000 rpm onwards

Problem with the drain hole is that the sender will hang a bit down to the road.
It' very dangerous when you hit something with that sender, because you'll loose all the oil!!!!

Do you need to use a non honda oil filter with this ? The gready site seems to suggest so.

I've got a VDO 14mm x 1.5 (#323-055) sender in my drain hole. It is just a fraction larger than the drain plug it replaced and does not hang down below the pan.
