If it's the tranny that came with the Z6 then it won't just work in your car. Z6 tranny is hydrolic so you will have to pay more $ and do som econverting. Not really worth it IMO.

Your stock Hf tranny will bolt right up to the Z6 motor so you can use your stock axles no problem. Down side is that your stock tranny has super long gear ratio - great for the mpg, but not for the performance.

If you can find an Si tranny then that would give you a nice swap with that Z6 motor. You can use your stock axles and hubs.

I can't say what's wrong with aht Z6 motor, but knock is usually something on the bottom end going bad in the motor - not a valve, but who knows. That's going to have to be something you decide on for yourself and hopefully you will tear down the engine for to do a simple rebuild before loading it into your car.

edit: 4dref beat me to it..

you will not need to change spindles if you use your current axles. They will work fine with the z6 transmission. all the d-series axles are the same on the transmission side of things.

You might want to search for topics on obd0 to obd1 conversions though, because you are going to need to do one. You will also need to do a cable to hydro conversion to use the z6 transmission, unless you use your current transmission on the z6 block.

you can make it as easy or as hard as you want to. if you use your old transmission and your old axles on the new engine, the only thing you will need to do is change the distributor and the ecu and add wiring for vtec. plug and play conversion harnesses exist to do all of that, so i would be going that route..

and "knock caused by a valve" means the person probably really has no idea what is wrong. I think even at $150, i would buy it, sell the transmission because it will just give you a migraine trying to make it work, and take the engine to a machine shop for a rebuild before putting it in. You might take it apart yourself first so you arent paying someone to find a broken piston, but then take in the 2 pieces to a machine shop to be checked over if they both look good otherwise.

Why would using the transmission be a migraine? Multiple kits allow you to use just like the hydro B-Series transmissions with the lever assembly.

True.. forgot about the hasport kit. So many years without an off the shelf solution, but now there is one. The only problem is it is twice the price of the setup this guy is buying, but I guess suggesting machine work to fix the engine also doesn't make sense in context. Either way, the op should know that there are easy ways and hard ways do do these things, and those listed above are the easy ways, but they cost money.

You could rebuild the HF motor for 150 bucks. the 70psi compression in 1 cylinder usually means the rings are going bad. But as said, you can use your HF trans with the z6 but it sounds like it has a rod knock. So instead of buying the motor for 150 then putting another 150-200 bucks into it to get it running, and then converting to obd1, buying a new ecu conversion harnesses etc, just put that money into rebuilding the motor in it until you are able to save up for whatever motor you choose to go with. Just my .02.

Id do the whole thing since you will have it apart, rod and main bearings, rings, gaskets and water pump and timing belt. Do it right the first time so you dont have to pull the motor in a couple of months because you reused old bearings or gaskets or what have you.

You said you didnt want to dump a bunch of money into it by replacing the main and rod bearings to ensure you have a car that you know won't take a **** on you but your worried about a trans or a head? You need to make sure you bottom end is decent or else the new head or trans you buy isnt going to do you crap. Again to each their own. Do it right the first time and rebuild the bottom end with new bearings, dont reuse the old ones it will cost a measly 100 bucks for peace of mind..
