Icon2 Buying used B18C5 - Questions! Help!

I am going to be checking out a used B18C5 Type-R engine that has about 68k miles on it. Its the engine only, no tranny, and its not in a car so I won't be able to test it out, obviously. What sort of things should I look for to make sure the engine is in good condition? The guy says he "has papers and is legit" but whats the best way I can make sure its not stolen? Ask him for the VIN and run it on carfax before I go check it out?

The guy was asking $2800 for the engine only, I told him I had $1900 and he said no, but then came back a few days later saying he could lower it some more if he took out the wiring harness and ECU to lower the price.

I have an old OBD1 P30 ecu laying around, will that work fine for a B18C5 engine? I am putting the engine in a '99 GS-R, and I have an OBD2-OBD1 conversion harness already. Will the P30 ecu plug and play fine? Or will I have to get it flashed with new software like Hondata. I found this list on the hondata website:

http://www.hondata.com/vehicles.html

It says that P30 OBD-I is a suitable replacement for a P73. Any help or any other info on swapping a B18C5 into a 99 GS-R would be great!

Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea And make sure the mileage on the Carfax is consistent with the mileage he's telling you.

However, I'm not sure how to check that the VIN is actually the one the engine came from. He could have found a VIN and mileage from a car for sale on Autotrader.

sounds overpriced unless he can prove mileage. you can buy a complete JDM ITR engine for 2800 shipped. of course they aren't proven mileage either but as a rule the JDM engines are much lower than your average USDM engine. also, they come with the harness and everything else.

So I ended up picking up a different engine last night, this one is from a usdm 2000 type-R, stock, with about 78k on it (or so they said, couldn't prove it). I ended up paying $2300 for it, complete engine without ecu/harness. I probably should have held out and gotten a better deal but I got a little anxious because I need a new engine to replace my stock gs-r which is burning/leaking a ton of oil.

The other guy I was originally talking about, with the 98 that had 68k miles, ended up texting me back today saying he'd let it go, complete with ECU and harness, for $2000. I guess he wasn't getting any other offers and was desperate. Doh! Oh well, patience is a virtue, which I do not have, lol.

BTW, as I mentioned before, I have a OBD1 P30 ECU with OBD2-OBD1 conversion harness. Will this ECU work ok without any modifications? Or should I pick up a P73... Thanks guys...
