Default Adding 400pounds to my crx

I'm probably going to be going against the grain with alot of people here. But I'm going to be adding close to 400pounds of audio equipment to my crx. Just wondering If i'm going to need to upgrade my coil overs and shocks. The ones on the car are fairly new, and the car rides smooth. Just seeing what you would do. It a 90crx hf, stock motor.

Since most of that weight's going to be in the trunk (I'm assuming), you're going to want to avoid too much sag. Might be a perfect reason to get a coilover setup. You can use stiffer springs in the rear to offset the added weight and use the coilovers' height adjustment to account for any changes in ride height. What's your suspension budget? There are cheap coilovers on the market, you can use just coilover sleeves with cheapo springs and shocks which will ride like crap but will get the looks thing done, or spend $1k+ on a decent setup that will drive well too.

400lbs? man that'll slow you down drastically at the track. lol. even on the street it'll seem more sluggish.

Don't really have $1k to drop on coil overs, the most I can do is $200. I know that's probably not going to do much, what would be the best bang for my buck?

Holy HELL!!! I had to ask didn't I. That thing is f*#$in massive man. Props on the setup coming from another AUDIO HEAD!!! As for what I'd do, I would honestly end up getting another suspension setup like recommended previously. It blows to say more money is involved but overall you will get what it is you ultimately want.

Side Note: You thinking about getting rid of that L7 you got sitting in the Rex? LMAO!

I have the faintest Idea on where to start looking for suspension for weight reasons. What do you think about air shocks? It would be greatly appreciated if someone can point me in the right direction.

and yes to your last question.

Planning to lower it at all?
If not, you can probalby just settle for some stiffer eBay springs since you are on a budget of $200..
Spending a little more for some inexpensive eBay coilovers would give you some adjustability if it sags, but that's in the nighborhood of $500 I think.

400 isn't really all that much if you consider what the car is rated for when loaded with passangers.
As long as you and your fat chick aren't 500 each then I don't think it's all that bad.

All that $ in the stereo and nothing for the rest of the car... been there myself
After 3 thefts the stereo equipment stays in the house.

LOL!!! The fat chicks are taking the bus from now on.

Your right though, I hardly have anyone else in the car with me. And it's mainly for work, which is only 8 miles away.

Off the top of my head, I remember Eibach and Tanabe used sell lowing springs.
A lowering spring is uses a spring that can hold up the load better due to it being lowered, but it usually comes with the side-effect of a bouncy ride since the stock shocks are still used.

Thinking a cheap set of coilovers might be the best approach since you can adust the ride hieght if the back sags. Even a set of ground control sleeves can do this for you.

Look in the glovebox of any crx and you will see that the maximum weight capacity is 400lbs.
This fact alone should tell you that the stock suspension is going to have a difficult time controling all this weight. I would suggest sleeve-type coilovers because they will have stiffer springs and give you some adjustability (just in case), and they can be had anywhere from $50 to $350. just remember that you get what you pay for as far as ride quality goes.

i got a ? for you. Is the box air tight? minus the port if you have it. Like the place where the back shocks come up how you gonna fill that in or its going to be left like that?

for the shocks you can get some GC/koni or gc/tokico

Since cost is an issue...

Koni Sport (Yellow) shocks. They have multiple circlip locations to reposition the spring perch. Set the rear to the higher setting (middle is stock), which would lift the rear some if the additional weight wasn't there. You only need a pair for the back. Use stock rear springs.

If that doesn't get you there (its still sagging too much), throw a set of spring rubbers in the rear springs to increase the rate slightly (really cheap), or stuff a rubber spring spacer (also dirt cheap) between the spring and upper shock mount.

That's both the cheapest and least likely to compromise ride quality solution.

That rating isn't for just the suspensions consideration, strain on the engine from pulling extra weight (reliability), strain on the brakes to stop the extra inertia, and handling are all factored in. The car will now have a good chunk of weight at the rear of the car, and relatively high from the ground. Sounds like a recipe for sudden oversteer to me.

Just something to keep in mind. Its your car and your safety, I won't preach (too much).
