Did I get shafted at the dealership?
I was installing my suspension and as I was putting together the right front, the threads where the allen key goes in on the shock snapped (shitty quality tokico illumina's ;[). So I was like '****'. I tried to get the stock spring back on the stock shock but my spring compressor clamps wouldnt allow the strut to compress evenly to get the top mount on so I had to get them recompressed somewhere. I bring it to the dealership and get it done and they charged me 82.00. Seems a bit ridiculous to me. They didnt have to put them on or anything, I brought the 2 springs and two shocks in a brown bag. Oh well, they send out survey's after servicing so I'll be sure to give them a shitty one.
I had the same thing done at a local tire place for $30-, so the stealership did "massage" you a little there. Still, look on the bright side - $83- is a lot cheaper than the hospital bill that you might have had if you messed up and ventilated the top of your head with the spring!
It was a little expensive, but you did the right thing.

Thanks. You made me feel a little better about it.
I have been kinda pissed about it for the last 3 days. The sad part is that I am probably taking the spring off again to put my coilovers on this weekend. Oh well

Sounds like they charged the average '1 hour labor' charge. It's typical for us to charge that much when someone brings in their parts that we have to fix. It's average, not horrible. I do agree with the other poster, better than a trip to the ER.
I dunno, an 82 bucks is a bit high for an hours labor. thats mostly what we do in such cases, but i dont see too many shops with a labor rate that high. ours is 69 and after the rediculously high tn state tax it still wouldnt be that much

Local dealer charges $85 an hour.
I had the same problem and took them to a local shop (SCCA FRIENDLY) and had it done for $15 or $20.
Get in touch with the local SCCA in your area. There are a number of shops that give big discounts to members. Plus they don't look at you funny if you use words like Nuespeed, Comptech, Koni.
That is hardly an hours worth of work, I was seriously expecting 40 bucks at most then he puts the paper down and it says 82. I'm like..Um..ok. How long does it possibly take to compress 2 springs onto a shock. I can do all 4 in less than an hour with the hand clamps you buy at sears. I was just pissed from the whole ordeal with my shock breaking and just wanted my teg back on the road ASAP so I didnt care. Now I wish I called around.
Now I wish I called around.
In NVA they charge from 65 to 79 per hours pending certifications or not and then they always add that stupid 'shop' fee for 10 - 20 $$$$
