Shifter cable issue (help)
Ok so my girl has an 02 coupe, and ive been noticing lately that it doesnt want to go into to gear.. not a tranny or clutch issue if the shifter is in neutral and u got to put it in say 3rd it will feel like there is stuff in the way (bunched up cable) but if u sway the stick back in forth in neutral and try and put it back then it goes fine.. any ideas? im a shift linkage guy i dont know the first damn thing bout these cables
Since you live in the road salt belt, check this first. Where the cable is mounted on the transaxle, there is a rubber bushing about 3.5 cm in width, that seperates from the cable(be careful sperating this or you may kink the cable) Clean steel washer, and nylon washer spacer. Check for corrosion on the inside of the round cable end, next try to seperate this rubber bushing from the trans mounted shift mechanism. If it is not seized, it will seperate easily, more than likely the brass bushing has bonded/corroded to the steel shift mechanism, as Honda had not applied any type of antiseize/lubricant when assembling. Cut the rubber off, then use vicegrips to remove the brass collar, clean the pencil sized piece of steel with sand paper or emery cloth. The bushing service part number from Honda Canada Inc is 54350-SF1-013. I had used Fluidfilm to lubricate when reassembling with the new bushing.
Yes this happened to me after the second winter, and I damaged the shifter cable (kinking it) when seperating, then pushing out of the way, did get a new one for free under Honda Canada Inc warranty.
