Default how long will a new motor smoke?

I was just wondering, my newly built motor w/8 miles on it is still blowing a small portion of smoke out of the exhaust. i was just wondering, with a new motor, how long does it do this and is there something wrong if it keeps on doing this after a certain amount of miles?

What was in the car? Did you blow the old motor? If so it may just be crap left over in your exhaust. Drive it around a while, it'll clear out. Also, how long has the car been sitting? Old gas?

I just rebuild my motor and it only smoked a little on start up. After the 20 mins of idling it never smoked again.

thanks guys, now i know that there's something wrong with my car. as you can clearly see, this was the first time ever that i had built my own motor. so i'm sure that i probably did something wrong. there's not a lot of smoke now but just enough so you can smell it and not really see it. oh well, i'll just keep riding that baby around and break her in and then see what happens.
