Default 01 civic over heated

01 ex 2dr.....what could be the problem? I got stock on the traffic for like 20 to 30 mins and saw my gauge was over the normal temperature. so turned on the heater (full blast) got it to normal for a liltle bit and I pulled over on the gas station, stop the engine, pop the hood and saw my reserve tank of coolant was over filled. (on the traffic I felt my fan was turning on by the way) upper radiator hose SO HOT! but lower radiator hose was ok to hold it, could it be the thermostat? my friend that works in Honda said its a sign of cylinder head gasket? he said the this model is known for head gasket failure and tranny failure.

I hope its just the thermostat.

I have 108,XXX miles.
