what color is the smoke?? u could possibly have blown a head gasket... but if it is the rings which it could most likely be, then driving it on bad rings you might have to have the cylinder walls honed out....

to the OP: have you done a cylinder leakdown test? i would do a compression test again also. drop a little oil down into the cylinders and retest. if the numbers rise drastically then you can pretty safely say its the rings. if not, then for some reason your valves aren't sealing properly, and you may have valve seals leaking which would cause you to burn oil.

I had a problem where i seated my rings and my car was running good but then i let it sit a few days in extremely cold temps and for some reason i had a ring freeze up that wasnt sealing anymore. I talked to a local tuner shop and they told me to put half a capfull of atf down each cylinder, let it sit a minute or two, fire it up and drive it continuing with the break in process of new rings. all i did was start it and they instantly sealed. i had to run it hard to get the oil out and bring the compression back up but it worked nicely.
