OK, so I got this code and read and reread all posts and threads related to this code. One thing I did notice was that most of these threads were for 99 and older models with high mileage. I have an 05 with about 56,000 miles. Could my CAT converter really need replacing???

P0420 generally does mean you need a cat... but lucky for you catalytic converters are covered by the manufacturer for 8 years or 80k miles assuming you haven't tampered or altered it in anyway. see your dealer.

Poor fuel can also throw this code. Try resetting it before spending the $$ on a new cat(unless its under warranty, which they still may charge a diagnostic fee). If the code comes back there are a few tests you can run using a hand held scanner to pin point your issue. Check out ALLDATAdiy.com for the procedures and testing.
Or you could just go to the dealer and not have to sign up and pay for that...
The dealer is free since the car is under warranty.
Poor excuse to ***** out alldata IMHO, especially since the procedures can be found right here for FREE.

P0420 definitely means that the cat converter is bad. Converters are covered under the emissions equipment warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles, so make an appointment at your local dealer to have it replaced. They will likely tell you that they'll have to scan it again to be sure and may hesitate to tell you whether or not it will be covered until they can check the car themselves, but trust me when I say that they will cover it free of charge.

Dealerships don't charge any diagnostic time when the failed part is covered under warranty.

Honda always takes care of that.

Also, when a P0420 comes up on a Honda, there is no question that the cat is bad. I've never seen a false P0420 on a Honda or Acura, and I service over 70 of them per week.

QFT....nice try at shameless plug for All Data

I have never seen bad fuel throw a P0420. Would throw a P0171 or P0172, P03xx etc before a P0420.

No, most of us are legit technicians with years of service...not salesman on a forum pushing product... 6 year Honda Gold here, before going independent

Edit...

It appears that inter-thread advertising MAY be allowed... if deemed acceptable by the moderator.

I want everyone to know that my criteria of this acceptability is that IF the advertisers response is informative and not simply in the form of advertising, it will probably be allowed.

In this very unique case, it may have in fact slightly out of bounds as the answer for a car that is within warranty is not to buy a new piece of equipment, but to return to the dealer for warranty work.

I want to apologize for any confusion to any of our regulars whom we greatly appreciate and specifically to our sponsor with whom we owe a debit of gratitude... I am trying to do the best I can with the tools I have at my disposal.
