Default Bad Hesitaion, low rpms, only when warm, and moderate throttle!

94 civic ex, d16z6.

symptoms: BAD hesitation in low rpms, under 3k.
ONLY when car is warmed up. the warmer it gets the worse it gets.
sounds like a helicopter when I give it more than 15-20% throttle, with NO ACCELERATION,
EVEN at WOT, until 3k then runs Awesome.

tried: I removed the air filter on my cold air intake system but hesitation is STILL
there, but maybe a LITTLE bit better.
New plugs aswell.

I am a poor college student so if anyone knows what is causing this, it would be appreciated.

had same problem and i adjusted the distributor aliitle bit more to advance and it stopped jerking from low-3k rpm.. my brohters college mechanic professor called it ignition timing.. hope this works for you also.. if not it might be your injectors spark plugs, spark plug wires or dizzy.. just got to check em one by one to see which is going bad

thanks ill check that again,
I just replaced the distributor because the car died and wouldn't start a couple of months ago,

With the new dist in the car started up first try! I did the timing, but the hesitation was still there, although it wasn't as bad before. there was hesitation before the new dist.

Ill get the timing light again and take a look. thanks

it sounds like the car is running on 2 cylinders when I hit the gas hard.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention that when it is first starting to get warm and it isn't that bad,

if I let off the throttle and hit it again it usually DOESN'T DO IT?, strange...

but yea, gonna check the timing first.

Also it could be the coil.. that could be going bad and it won't be giving you the proper spark to ignite the fuel

X2. But he did say he replaced the distributor so i dont think its coil. Are you sure your spark plug wires are in correct order?

Here is a pic just for reference.

not sure if anyone said it but i had ran in to a problem like that on my old nissan i know its not a honda but have you checked you injectors. by pulling one by one off to see if there is change in the rpm. i know it helped with that car but i mean its still a shot in the dark beats replacing the coils and distributor piece by piece when u can check the injectors it just cost less to check them and replace one or two at most.

yeah when it wouldn't start b4. I did "Suspend the Fuel rail" then crank it a sec. and they all made spots of fuel on the cloth I laid down.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems to have been the ignition timing as first stated, apparently I didn't know how to properly set the timing b4, and had it set by the 3 lines. which is WRONG!! , I didn't see any other lines at the time as the crank was dirty, and it ran alright so I just assumed it was correct. (yeah i know... didn't study much on the civic, mainly on the 300)

I now see that it needs to be set so it is at the other line, about an inch and a half up.
BUT now my distributor is fully rotated and it still is about a HALF INCH away.

Any other ways to advance the timing???

it's your wires i would say, i had the same problem to the tee man, exactly the same thing.
i replaced; spark plugs, coil, o2, fitv, iacv, fuel filter, cleaned throttle body and intake manifold and got an oil change and got there fuel cleaner service done (which is kinda like seafoam)... not one of those things helped. I replaced my spark plugs wire as the last thing...solved it. needless to say i was about to start spending a lot more money, so save some and just replaced the wires.

its better now,
but even when its warm it is still 3/4 of an inch away from the white mark...
it runs better but still hesitates in the lower rpms, under 2k usually.

ok well its still not good, WHERE SHOULD IT BE TIMED TO ON A D16Z6???
NOT ON THE WHITE LINE AT TDC???
SHOULD IT BE ON THE LAST OR FIRST OF THE 3 LINES AND THE RED DOT??
MY BOOK DOESN'T SAY.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned already because I didn't read the whole thread, but can't a clogged cat cause this hesitation, too?
