Help me decide: Drop trans or pull engine with trans.
'96 EJ6 D16Y7 bone stock DD.
So I have noticed clutch chatter recently, and soon I am going to have to fix it. While I'm at it I am also going to get the flywheel resurfaced and I think I may have to replace the rear main seal (I think it my be leaking a bit).
I don't own a lift or a garage.
Obviously I'll have to pull both axles and disconnect the shift linkage.
If I leave the engine in I'll have to remove/replace the tranny, clutch assembly and the rear main from underneath. That seems like it would be a PITA to do in my driveway, especially reinstalling the tranny.
I've been thinking, maybe I should just pull the engine and tranny together. It will take longer, but maybe not much longer and it will be much easier to do the clutch/flywheel/rear main.
I already have to disconnect the axles and linkage. The rest to pull the whole thing is not very hard: wiring, coolant hoses, radiator, fuel line, clutch line, mount bolts, exhaust etc. I don't think it will take too much longer.
This was my fourth engine swap, I put the engine in about a year and a half ago and I maintain it myself - I am not a n00b when it comes to Civics - but I have never just dropped the tranny in a Civic.
Am I crazy to pull the whole thing just to do a clutch and seal?
Please help talk me into/talk me out of this idea. Any relivent opinion is appreciated.
Thanks guys

Just drop the trans man. I used to think it was way easier to just pull the motor until I swapped the trans in my old crx. It took me about 3 hours in total by myself. To put the trans back in I just leaned over the passenger side fender and picked the trans up from the ground and lined it up. I think the hardest part about the job is messing with the rear motor mount.

pull the trans all the way, i did this not too long ago to change trannys. Just put the front on jack stands and use a small jack with block of would under the oil pan to support the motor while you take a trans off. Can be done in a day easy (replacing clutch), the hardest part is the shift linkage pin, which isnt hard with a air chisel, 8mm punch, or a/c comp bolt to push it out with
Looks pretty obvious that just dropping the tranny is the way to go. I guess I was crazy to consider pulling the motor.
For those of you who said pull the engine and tranny please explain why you recommend I do that.

You dont need a hoist or anything, the transmission doesnt weight but 80 pounds if that. You can take it off and put it back on by lifting it with your hands.
i dont have a lift or hoist, and i just dropped my enigne from the bottom of the car and replaced it with another. i dont know if it being a crx makes a difference, but if you jack the front of the civic high enough, you can slide the engine out on its front side.
the trans is easy as hell like everyone says. it only weights like 85 lbs. just get a jack and stands, and leave the engine in. it can be a bitch realigning the engine by yourself and getting the mounts on. the trans isnt so bad. just put it on the jack and jack it up when your ready to put it back into the engine.
