hey guys im new.
hi, im introducing myself in this thread, i am new to cars and just bought my first one, it is a 00 civic dx with a d16y7 engine, or im thinking thats what it is. well yea after i got the car i became very interested in cars and engine work, i wonder if you guys have any advise on how i can start learning or what i should do to make my car run better/faster ?
welcome the d16y7 isnt the fastest engine but I origionally had one in my 1997 hatch and it had 242,000 flawless miles on it when I did the b series engine swap thats a good reliable engine you got mine never leaked or burned a drop of oil ! yeah just read and read you'll find all sorts of stuff on the forums have fun and enjoy !!
oh ya i heard about the b-series engines, if i would wanna do a swap, is it like as a whole or do i have to get one by one parts for it , and how much you think it would cost? thanks in advance
yours is a 00 so i suggest if you swap a B series and go with a 99-00 b16 si motor first.. you will need the complete swap from mounts, harness, axles, distributor, ecu, alternator, and maybe throttle cable or maybe you can just customize yours a little bit.. PRICE wise you can get everything for under $900 if you find the right sellers that sells everything with the motor = COMPLETE SWAP.. less if you but stolen motors lol.. i prefer legit motors
thanks that help me, sorry for the questions but umm if you mix and match engine parts like d-series to b-series or just not the same parts, will it stilll be able to work or no?

welcome man, and welcome to the wonderful world of hondas. b for b and d for d. like the other guy said find your self a 99-00 si swap. learning how to work on these cars is very easy. READ READ READ and research save helpful links. with the help of this forum there isnt much you shouldnt be able to do by yourself
no most parts will NOT FIT!!!! little stuff will tho.. but you would have to know which DOES.. sensors and wires like that works almost every time.. as for the motor to motor parts, no they are totally different but mostly same way to fix.. asking questions will help n there is no such thing as a dump question.. unless its unrelated to the forum subject LOL
hey,
I just signed up myself.
I have had a few Honda's, this is my third one.
Ive had a 87 CRX, 90 civic 4 door sdn, and currently a 93 civic CX HB.
I really needed a car that was cheap on gas and easy to maintain. So I got rid of my big truck and got this one.
I bought my 93 civic for $340, since then have put another couple hundred into it and maybe 5 hours of labour.I've put 500 milometers on it (310 miles) and all seems good.
it had a new water pump, timing belt, cold air, stainless sebring exhaust, tires (even though I changed them out for 15inchers) yadda yadda...previous owner slid into a pole when we had snow and up it went for sale for cheap...i got some more work to do, paint, etc... but it gets me where I want to go and I like it...who cares what other people think....that's what I say...when im done with it in a year or 2 i will get back everything i spent on it and then some...thats how ive always done it and cars have been free all my life...cant learn to fix em up by just talking about it...you just have to do it...sometimes 3 times the same job until you get it right...but you wont make that mistake again, not even in 10 years LOL
get a repair manual and learn as you go...it helps to have someone there but you cant learn without a few mistakes along the way...just dont give up.
it is incredibly rewarding to fix your own vehicle...the money you save on labour can buy you a tool or 2 each job you do...and you keep the tools for good...before you know it you will have tools for everything and then they can earn you extra money on the side...or just help a neighbor out or coworker...it is great.
now with the internet you can read about a job before you do it to learn from others mistakes.
im rambling...and just gotta remember your always learning...it dosnt stop...
bodywork is my new passion...as a hobby... bending metal, welding, applying fillers, painting...its one thing to make a car run good, but making them look good too...its the ultimate...not that Im there myself...but I'm closer than I have ever been...its a great hobby...
what i did wrong when i started, was i always assumed it was a major problem and the car needed something big done to it...when most times its a very small part that needs replacing and some thought to diagnose it...older cars just have little glitches aswell...if they run and get you where you want to go dependably...an odd idle every now and then or some other weird little thing, really is nothing... unless your willing to spend your hard earned cash on throwing parts into a car and losing major when it comes time to sell...
you will meet people thru the hobby too...thats also something good about it...even just searching the classifieds or craigslist...you meet people into the same cars and make friends with similar interests...its really a way of life for me now...and it keeps your mind occupied and keeps you out of trouble...girls dig it too LOL...its a great skill to have.
some folks get jealous and will try and bring you down...but when your blessed your blessed...hey will have to fume all alone :-)
here is my current "beater" and I love it...

thank God for it everytime Ive gone a long distance and spent like $4 in gas to buy another part or another tool in it too.
Honda's are excellent...1 of the best vehicles made.

talk about a ****in hijack
thnx for the help guys. okay i got one more question i think, im planning to order these headers as wdissident suggested so . will this fit in my d16 ? im planning on working around this engine because i geuss swapping completely would cost me a lot of money and i am only a high school student. and if it does fit what other parts should i replace? im alrdy getting a new timing belt and water pump this weekend.
well if you are short on cash i guess you could do a very basic bolt on but you will not see much gain from it. get your self a good name brand header, intake, catback to start with and maby a cam
oh allright thanks for the info, i kinda got the basic of these. ill loook around the forum for more stuff to do. thanks alot again. xD
