you might be better off just getting a JDM LS long block from some place close like jdm engines corp in texas. normally you can get the JDM LS motors for $500-600 complete. machine work and parts can quickly add up to twice this or more.

yep it will be pricey. Just OEM gaskets, seals, oil pump, water pump, timing belt and tensioner would probably be around $600, not even taking into account engine internals

depends on the shop. also hmotorsonline has b18b long blocks for 749 plus shipping. jdm engines corp is asking 999 shipped but dave at jdm will take 900 shipped if you offer to do it outside ebay and stay firm on your offer. my wild *** guess is around 300 to pop a motor, 400 tops. if you play your cards right you could probably get a new motor installed for $1200. personally i would spend the extra $100 on a clutch while you're in there. also, the jdm engines are more powerful due to the extra compression.

what is the ls intended use?... because there is the other maybe cheaper alternative... b20! but you might have smog issues depending on your local smog laws. some places sell b20s for 500 picked up. probably 200-300 for shipping.

i doubt there is any issue with running a b20 in kansas and a low-mileage b20z would be a good alternative.

if you are going the route of just swapping the block, why not just do it yourself? it will be cheaper to buy the necessary tools if you don't already have them and you will gain some valuable experience. i can understand not wanting to undertake an actual rebuild, but swapping a b-series engine into a b-series chassis is not that hard as long as you're patient and organized.

b20s are my vote as well as long as you can do it legally. not being able to register a car would suck. they cost less than the b18b by quite a bit. i think jdm engines corp which is really close to you has them for something like $500

well its a ls/vtec and its boosted so a b20 wont work as well as a ls since their high comp? im getting ge vtec kit installed so i wanted to rebuild the block while its out, and as for smog issues it wont be a problem in kansas. i'd love to do the job myself but i live in a apt complex and dont have any access to a garage. thanks for the offer wunfastgsr but im not in need of a new motor now, maybe when i blow mine? lol thanks for the reponses and input guys, does anyone know where i can get a oem rebuild kit (gaskets, seals etc.)?

well... jdm 96-98 b20b's have 8.8c/r which is lower than the ls 9.2c/r.

oh yeah here are a couple websites where you can get everything you need for cheaper than going to your local stealership.

hey guys just did a comp test on the motor today, results turned out to be

190
172
179
172

theres a couple things wrong with the car like bad hg, valve cover gasket, and its leakin pretty bad from the turbo manifold due to stripped bolts. what do u guys think? am i in need of a rebuild or will replacing the hg and refreshing some stuff up do the job? i'd like to save as much money as possible due to school thanks for the replies guys.

the compression numbers are alright even though we would all like to see #1 a little lower or the other 3 a little higher. what's wrong with the HG? you have oil in the coolant? valve cover is simple and like $20

yeah it leaking pretty bad from the side under the cams u can see a mixture of coolant and oil. the 3 lower cylinders were the ones with the missing bolts so im guessing thats the problem?
