Default intercooler/ic? piping shortcut

ok this might not make alot of sense, but i'll try to explain it my best. so i was wondering what intercooler do you know of that would alow u too do the ic piping short cut from the throttle body down to intercooler instead of the long way, which would be from the throttle body to the side where the hole is down the over to the IC? or am i wrong and u can pretty much do it to any intercooler? well the reason i was asking is because i was looking at some intercoolers and they're a little long so it would actually HAVE to go around and up through the hole. anyways, what intercooler? this would be going into an ek btw.

Might wanna check out Forge Intercoolers there kinda expensive as well but perform nicely. Also SRT-4's have dual backdoor intercoolers.

When you do a dual backdoor you have to hack up your radiator support, you have to shift your radiator to the middle of your car which if you dont have a topmount the fitment can be tight if not impossible, I certainly couldnt do it with my ramhorn.

I know T1 could make one for you, and FR might even sell one currently.

You can also run your piping under the front frame and then up by your tranny and not through the "hole", that is how I use to have mine.

the results will be minimal if any at all, if you want to reduce spool time then you should install a properly sized turbo and intercooler for your application....reducing the charge pipe length by a 2foot or so isnt going to do much......what diamter are you using now? unless you are running big power levels you shouldnt be above 2.5

yeah i know it won't be too big of a difference, but still i think it looks way cleaner with the shortcut. t57b18 if u could post a pic on here it would be great.

well if your going for looks thats one thing, but performance increases are another story, good luck on whatever you decide

One thing to note, shorter piping really doesn't decrease spool RPM much. It decreases transient boost response, but only by a fraction of a second. That benifit is reduced the bigger the turbo & bigger the motor.

The short explaination is your charge piping isn't really what has to fill up with pressure. Its your turbo that has to start blowing more than 1x the amount of air the engine consumes at that given RPM. Think of the engine as a huge leak in the charge pipe - you have to overcome that leak before you even have to worry about filling the piping. FYI it takes a b16 1/4 of a second to cycle (completely empty) a long 2.5" charge pipe setup at 3500rpm.

As far as spool RPM is concerned, it mainly how much energy you shoot into the turbine, and how much energy it needs to accellerate the turbine & compressor wheels. In a world w/o inertia, a large compressor wheel would spool faster, since it 'bites' 2-3x the atmosphere per revolution. Its the inertia that reverses this, as it accellerates much slower.

yeah, saving a couple feet is not a good trade off in this case. You end up adding more turbulence having the air enter and exit your endtanks 90 to the flow of the core. Good flow is more important, espicially on the outlet side since you already cooled the air down.

Makes sense, if it was as simple as the shortest path was best then log manifolds would be king.
