Default HELP!!!!!!! Clunking at speed and oil leak!!

O.K. I need help. After a tranny removal and install, the drivers side axle was replaced. During the removal of this axle the INT. shaft had to be "convinced" to let go of the axle. i.e. hammering in a tie rod seperator to get them apart. The tranny was reinstalled and the axles and everything was put back together. While the car was jacked up, the wheels, with directional tires were swapped front to back, back to front. After all this is done, the front of the car is "shimmying" at speeds around 65 and above. This is noticable through the steering wheel. The car was taken in for an alignment and balance twice, during wich I watched them do the work. All tires are balanced and the alignment is dead on. What the hell could be causing this clunking? The guy at the tire place said it had something to do with rotating the tires, could this be so? Also, after this work was done, I noticed that the passenger side of my undercarriage is drenched in oil. It appears to be from the tranny. The drain bolt was retightened. The tire guy said it might be the gasket or jointy thing where the axle goes into the tranny case. Could these problems correlate? There is a LOT of oil under my car...and on the back.. I need help!!!

Cliffnotes: HELP ME, GODDAMIT!!!

alex, your best bet is to clean the tranny case up as best possible, go for a short ride and see if the oil is leaking from one spot. if your axle seals are bad, they are pretty easy to replace. you just have to drain the tranny fluid, again.

Well, I simple-greened and rinsed the bottom of the car, and after a short ride have not noticed anything yet. However, this leads me to thinking that possibly the "clunking" is something like the int. shaft is futzed up and the jarring at high speeds is causing the oil to leak out from the seals... maybe?? After coming home from Providence last night there was oil dripping of the bottom of my car...

Well, I have figured out that these two problems are correlating. The oil is definately coming out of the passenger side axle seal. However, when I stay at low speeds all is fine. I drive on the mass pike out to my GF's house, the entire bottom of the car is DRENCHED and there is an oil mist all over the rear of the car. I will replace seal, but what is the damn shimmying? I think replacing the seal is premature becuase I don't know what the clunking is yet... Should I replace int. shaft? I can see where there are "elliptical" spots on the gaskety type thing that is on the int. shaft... pleas help me...

i would try to swap the int. shaft for a known good one and see what happens. if the shimming goes away then you know what your problem is.
