Shifter rattle!! need help identifying the problem?
Hey Guys,
i have a crvtec with a b16 tranny non lsd. My shift shifts pretty well except a little grind in third gear which doesn't really bother me. But my main concern is whenever i'm driver in any gear and let's say i'm keeping it steady above 3000 rpm there is this big rattle sound coming from the shifter and everytime I must keep my hand on the shifter to stop the noise. Is anyone familiar with this problem or the least know what it could be ralated to?

exhaust heat shield on the cat? shifter hits the shield and stops it from rattling? or could be a loose bitch pin? or maybe u have a loose bolt on ur shifter? why dont you try looking underneath your car :-P?
Yes, the bolt that the shifter pivots on is very slightly loose. Its really tricky to get it adjusted just right, too tight and the shifter is stiff, too loose and it rattles, its a very thin line between the two.
nice fact to know i'll check that first thing when I get home tonight. But I tought that it could be the shifter bushings?? Is
FO SHO!!! XX2 when u change to short shifter u have to take that bolt out... main one that holds the shifter and not hard... just get underneath your car and u will see it.... i believe its 2 12" wrenches u need... or one 12 and an allen wrench
it might also be the bushings, which is in my case i have energy suspension and b&m short shifter and its not hitting my cat heat shield or any pipping of my exhaust.
mine has a faint vibration and causes the SHIFT **** to rattle. haha.

rjmacia.. I've actually forgot to mention that I do have a short shifter. So You're saying that I must remove the bolt that the shifter pivots on?
yeah that one.... its probably too loose or too tight check it out cause that will cause it to do that most of the times
All right thanks alot guys. And for the record, is that bolt under the car or in the car like do I have to remove the center console to get to it?
Just a thought,
I had the exact same issue when I swapped in my skunk2 short shifter. It turns out the butt of my shifter was touching the stock exhaust and causing the rattle. When I changed my exhaust to a snkunk2 the clearance was better and the rattling stopped.
If yours isn't clearing right, you may be able to shave a little bit off the end of the shifter in order to make it clear. (providing that is your problem of course) Be careful not to over do it of course.
En passant, salut d'Ottawa.

Depending on the shifter b serious would be right.
a lot of people assume its hitting the exhaust, or too lose, or a bushing.
I have a B&M short shifter (im sure it happens with a few others) but there are 2 washers that are not thick enough that still cause metal to metal type friction, all you need to do is get thicker washers and it will eliminate your rattle (worked for me)
Search B&M rattle there is a lot of posts on it.

Sounds like that's what it is because it does sound like a metallic rattle and when i'm cruisin on the high way, if i push on my shifter to the right the rattle stops.
I have a honda civic doing the same thing with the rattle however when i'm in gear the shifter still has a lot of give to it from side to side. Is this a worn bushing maybe??
energy suspension makes them, comes with the shifter and shift linkage bushings.
i mean just search honda shifter bushings on google...
