Default VTEC small coolant drain bolt at the left end of the block

vehicle: 1995 with VTEC engine

guys, during the course of speaking with Honda parts, i was asked which drain bolt i was referring to, the smaller 12 mm one to the left of the big drain bolt on the drivers side, or the large 28 mm closest to the side of the oil filter.

what is the deal with the smaller drain bolt? is it an aluminum or steel bolt? it seems the smaller bolt is at a lower position on the block and easier to access, but perhaps it drains a different area of the engine? anyone know?

thank you.

I don't think the smaller one is a drain bolt, but a rear balance shaft access bolt?

i believe your correct. i found a shop that rebuilds Honda engines and had a 95 VTEC in the shop to look at and they said it was an access bolt. probably what you said. Helms seems to show the same thing. i was going to delete this post but since I couldn't find anything in the archives, might as well leave it alone.
