Default tranny grinds in 2nd and 3rd...

so i was goin to replace the syncros (sp?) but honda does not sell just the syncros (brass colored things...i think). so what do i need to look at to find out what to replace? would i just need to replace the countershalf parts or the mainshaft parts or does it depend. btw, i have the tranny open. the only wearing i can see is on the gear just above the 1st gear on the counter shaft (closest shaft to diff).

Bottom Line: If tranny is grinding, with it apart what do i need to look for?

You will need a complete gearset for the grinding gears. Usually 1st synchro and 2nd gear are together in a set and 3rd is separate (d series). In other words, you would buy a 1st and 2nd synchro set which comes with second gear,1st and 2nd synchros, and reverse gear- and 3rd gearset which comes with 3rd gear and 3rd synchro set. A new 2nd gearset for a d series will set you back @$300 new from Honda. Unsure on B series gearing, haven't had to work on one yet.

1) item 4 in this first one (countershaft)

or
2) items 4 and 8 in this second one (mainshaft)

which do you THINK would cover my 2nd and 3rd gear synchro problems

#4 (15940) on countershaft is 1-2 synchro set plus 2nd gear, you need this. If you have trouble with grinding into first gear, I would also get #2 (15843) but I don't think you need it. #4 (15994) on the mainshaft is 3-4 synchro set plus 3rd gear, you need this also. If you look these up on Honda's computer they will have gear numbers in their description.

I would also check the wear on your shifter forks- particularly 1-2 fork- they are aluminum and wear easily.

after going back and forth between helms, the acuracarland diagram, and the physical gears, i see what you are talking about. all the synchros that appear to have wear are covered in item 4 in both the countershaft diagram and mainshaft diagram.
the shiftforks dont look brand new but they look alright.
this is going to set me back a little more than a i thought but i will practically have a brand new tranny.
thanks for your help.
