Default Loud valvetrain on cold starts??

i have a 96 accord lx with a jdm f22b. when i start the car after its been sitting outside in the cold (winter) for a while, the valvetrain is loud. its runs fine the valvetrain is just loud. once it runs for 3-5 minutes it sounds fine. the old f22b2 i had in it did the same thing. if i pull it in the 65 degree shop and let it sit all day, it still does it but not nearly as loud.

i have 2 ideas
1. i swapped oil pumps when i put in the jdm engine, maybe a weak/old oil pump?
2. valve train tolerances out of spec so valve lash needs to be adjusted?

any ideas???

Most likely the valvetrain just needs adjusting. The F22 engines all require periodic check and adjusment of the tolerances. The clearance specifications are only like 10 to 12 thousandths depending on the valve. I wouldnt suspect an oil pump at all. Just go get a cheap feeler guage and check the tolerances.

By the way these engines are naturally somewhat noisy when their cold from the valvetrain because of their design.

Try checking and adjusting the valves it sounds like they need to be adjusted

Honda had a TSB involving excesive valve noise which I believe involved your year car. I think (I'll have to check) that it involved the replacement of the #2 Valve Rocker Arms and it's associated pivot shaft.

I'm not sure if the Honda Japanese home office issued this for that market, but it's a hint as to what MAY be going on.

I'm trying to find you the text.

I would also suspect the Fuel Injectors. They can get rather loud at times.
If you use a length of hose as a stethescope, you may be able to seperate out the offending component.

i dont think its an injector. it sounds almost like a slight knocking coming from the valve train area when its cold. ever start a car after doing an oil change and the engine is loud for a sec becuase its dry? thats what it sounds like. thats why i suspected the oil pump. but if it was the pump i would think it would do it all the time, it was just a thought. the tolerances of something are definately out of wack because like a said its not loud once it warms up. i have a feeler gauge, ive just never done these valve adjustments before so i didnt want to jump right into it unless it was necessary. i guess i'll start there.

adjust the valves. it is normal for high milage F series to make noise to to cam journal (#2 cyl) wear but it does not impact the engine at all
