hey so my dad was out looking for paint for his mustang and they told him that it would require a 3hp compressor. i just used my husky 30 gallon compressor to paint my car with a husky hvlp. he said that the compressor will put out 90 psi but the gun will take it down to 40 psi, was this guy just bsing or not. what paint would u recommend also this needs to b oem mustang paint. we are looking for a better than oem paint job
i painted my car with a 1.5hp husky compressor. Its somewhere between 35-and 50 gallons i cant remember. 30ish psi for the base, and about 45 psi for the clear. I was fine.

yeah really, 90 psi is just laughable. Its all on your technique though. That's just to high in my opinion. I seriously doubt this guy telling you this **** has ever painted anything more than a model car.

If your dad has anymore doubts, a simple call to any paint gun mfgr would tell the info you need. An HVLP gun is 10psi MAX at the tip. That's goes for all of them. Non HVLP I spray ~25psi (a bit higher for metallics) and ~35-40psi for my clear. Good luck.
