Idle driving me nuts
k guys i have a 96 jdm itr
any way it started to randomly do the following
i this would happen hot or cold the car could be just sitting there idle would be ok then it would drop to 500 rpm for a sec then rev up to 2k and come back to 800- 900 rpm idle ok for any thing from 10 seconds to 2mins then it would repeat its self then some times it would just sit at 500rpm or even less and not change like it was cutting out but wouldnt i checked the timing with a gun and its seems to be grand kinda hard to check with the idles changing every couple of seconds , i have no cel codes and the car is running skunk2 stage to cams but did this just before i put them in when it was running stock itr .
lads i would really be greatful if ya could help me out here .

I'm sure it's a bad IAC or FITV also. My car idles too. Just don't want to fix it right now cause it's been cold here, below 0 and -22 w/ windshield and the caR is taking it's winter nap.
The IAC is the first thing I'm gonna clean out when the weather gets better.

no fitv (fast idle thermo valve) on an itr, but the iacv (idle air control valve) needs to be not only cleaned, but you also need to do the following:
disconnect your negative battery terminal.
remove the iacv from the intake manifold (2 10mm bolts, 2 small coolant hoses, & a wiring plug) ** you only need to remove the coolant hoses if you feel like removing the iacv from the bay. **
take the 2 screws out of the little steel cap on the end of the IACV (not the rectangular flange where the coolant nipples stem from, but the round flange on the end of the cylinder. remove the cap, and unscrew the whole piece that is inside (you may need to use a couple flathead screwdrivers or similar for this). clean what you can, and screw it all the way back in (making sure not to crossthread it). seat it all the way down as tight as you can. put it back together. put it back on. reconnect the battery. bet its fixed. good luck
also, make sure you don't have any air pockets in the cooling system. this can also cause an erratic idle. removal of all air bubbles can be achieved using a funnel that sits on the radiator where the cap goes (i got mine from the mac guy, but advance auto should have them). fill this with coolant mix and let the car run for awhile (~30 min). keep the coolant level at least half way up the funnel. then shut the car off. let the car cool down (coolant level will go down in the funnel as the engine cools, so keep it at least half full. after it sits for about an hour, plug the funnel, pull it from the radiator, & replace the radiator cap. this should definitely fix your idle issue. make sure you do disconnect the battery too. most people would skip that step, but its crucial in this situation.
