Icon3 Help A Noob Out (B Series)

okay so i had a original post up in the engine section bout the B16 VS the D16... after hearing some thoughts and making a decision i decided to go with the B series... but some one suggested a B18B with a B16 tranny... and that sounded pretty good to me, so as i started reading on the discussions of B16 Vs B18 i ran into a few snags on the decision...

so now im wondering... which would be the best choice based upon reliability, money, and final results... turbo the B18B with a B16 lsd tranny or the B16A?

im a little concerned about being vtec-less, although i know the high compressions dont work well with turbos... but this is the post that threw the wrench into my works:

"B16 has a great head, short geared transmission, but a shitty bottom end.
B18B has a shitty transmission, a shitty powerband, a shitty head, and good torque"

im not looking for a super car, just in the neighborhood of 250+ to 300+hp no higher than 400... dont have the time money or resources for something like that-- id be overly joyed with 250.

please help a noob out with some advice/experience/input/ suggestions

The more and more I think about it and I start to realize that d series is the ****. No need for b series unless you are planning on going into low 10s or faster. Or if you want more torque for daily driving. Stick with D, 2 times cheaper and will do the same if setup correctly. If not for your power goals either one of these motors will work just go for the one that you can find the cheapest. Some people might say that you can't find b16 for cheap they are wrong, I've found a legit b16 swap for $850 for everything including EM1 front brakes.

BTW there is a huge difference between 250 and 400 whp, so make up your mind. 250 is cool to keep up with most cars, 400 = shitting your pants while you are trying to keep the car on the road due to street tires while putting bus lengths on that LS1 car next to you, lmao.

why not put the best of both worlds together?? b16 tranny, b16 head and b18 bottom end + boost?? make it a LS/VTEC its been proven and done many of times. b18a/b blocks are cheap and b16/b18 vtec heads you can pick up for around 400.

250-300 is easily achieved w/ stock internals, but when you step up to 400 you have a **** load more stuff to worry about plus a 350+ FWHP street car is pointless in my opinion. you wont be able to handle the power and ive never seen anyone riding on slicks 24/7

just my .02

haha yes, i understand thats a quite a big jump, i suppose i should have just stopped at 320, cause i wouldnt want anymore than that, i just always get asked the question well why dont you use this engine and you can get 400 outta it and i dont want that... yes keeping it on the road would be a bitch, my buddy has a 600HP prelude engine in his hatch and it breaks away in 3rd gear, ive never been more scared in my life lmao...

so i still have people pushing for the D... i would go for that, but ive just been leaning to the B now unless i cant find one, id obviously settle for the D... but Ls/Vtec sounds like it may be a winner...

I'm going to be running 350 WHP on my b16. Springs, retainers, valve's and cams is all i'm doing. From my research the stock b16 bottom ends are good for 350 WHP. When i decided i wanna go for more, i will be building the bottom end and getting a bigger turbo. I personally would never go with a d series, but that's just me.

there is nothing wrong with d series it's cheap and makes great power. 350whp with b16 is pretty managable especially if you got a good head to go with it.

Like I said, I personally would never go with a D series...That's just me. I love my boosted b16, and yes 350 whp is very easy to achieve with a stock internal b16. You could simply just do headstuds and head gasket and it should be fine with 350 WHP, as long as you got a good tuner. Tuning is the key.

If you're shooting for 400whp, i would not suggest a B16 tranny. The low end torque coupled with the short gearing makes for instant tire spin. I personally prefer the GSR tranny for both the street and the track. Its not as fast as the B16 tranny, but is far more controllable on the street.

whats your budget??

from my experience of boosting hondas (ive had a d16z6-t, and ls-t) i liked the cheapness of the D but the torque of the LS.
B-series are more reliable and will give you a more broader chance to go fast and faster. how i see it "if you cant afford to do it twice, then do it right the first time"

d16s @ 350whp wont be achievable with a stock engine no doubt
What i would consider "safe" on a d16 with a "built" bottom end would be ~250-300whp if you want it to last a while

b18 will def. handle the power a bit better and produce more hp/psi. 350 is achievable on a stock b18 with the right tune but if you can afford to throw some rods and pistons in there and upgrade your head a bit you will not regret it. And the engine will thank you later.

As mention above, the information provided is just my personal experience and im sure many people will disagree.
