Default MOTOR OIL QUESTION

OK I'VE HEARD A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS FROM PPL, BUT IS IT BETTER TO RUN SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL, SUCH AS MOBIL 1 OR ROYAL PURPLE, ON A B16A OR SHOULD U JUST STICK WITH NORMAL CONVENTIONAL OIL?

hate to say it but you're going to hear a lot different things from people. most well say synthetic, cause you get that chushen, and they well give you so many different types of oils. i don't think there are a lot of people on here that still use conventioal oil. maybe the guys with d15's????

so for MOP, royoal purple. but have been thinking about changing to valvoline synthetic.

redline, amsoil, or royal purple. In that order for me. Like said, sooo many different opinions. All I have to go from is my success with 13K rpm race motors. I know people that also run shell rotella conventional oil in the same motors so who knows. I may be wasting my money on the "good stuff", but I will keep doing so because it either works or I bought into hype. I think it works though.

Eh, it's just a B16, no reason to get crazy. I would stay away from Mobil 1 only because of how easy it burns but running the higher end synthetics is overkill IMO.

Then again, I'm running conventional oil in a F20C so I obviously don't buy into the synthetic hype too much.

it also depends on how you drive, how many miles, and how old the engine is. i mean your F20c might be okay to run conventional oil now, but later on when you get close to 90k or higher, might want to think synthetic.

and it's not real hype, if i can remember, there was a oil comparison on how well it helps on engine internal wear. were they used the bearing test to show you how well the oil pretects. ranging from convetional oil to royal purple.

and Mobil1 isn't the same as it was, why don't really know.

being a manger at a quick lube shows you a few things about all the different oils and its actually really nice. first thing, stay away from ALL Pennzoil products, stuff is garbage! its very dark coming out of the bottle let alone after 3k in your car. yes that includes penzoil platnum. next thing, Im a mobil 1 beleiver, we have people that have been useing MB1 for about 175-200 thousand miles and still goin, and thats changing it every 5k! imagine if they went every 3k. lastly if you are absolutley set on useing conventional oil, I reccomend Castrol GTX... Very good oil. like i said I get to see what all these oils look like after they have been used and abused.

My vote goes to Mobil 1... some will argue against me but my vote is based on somebody i know have some problems with Royal purple. He was running it in a mild 350 SB-C build and after using that oil for about 10k miles he decided to switch headers and when he took off his old ones there was a very thick purpleish black residue all over inside of them. never heard of any other oil doing that... MB1 gets my vote

Stock B16A, use synthetic 5w30. If it has higher miles, use non-synthetic or higher grade synthetic.

Race motor? Full synthetic or Royal Purple.

I've got a stock B16 and I change my oil alot. If the dealer is closed I'll get MB1. Now this is just my ***-dyno opinion but OEM 5W30 runs the best but it burns off fast. 10W30(the recommended oil for high revving VTEC motors) doesn't burn off but it isn't as nice as the 5W30. MB1 is so-so. If your motor is stock just stick with OEM (and a HAMP filter).

It has 105k. In fairness though, I only threw conventional in it because I knew I was putting it in storage in a month and am planning to change it in the spring. What will I put in then? Meh, no idea right now but I'm leaning towards staying with what is working fine right now (it was burning whatever oil was in there before switching, hasn't burnt any since).

Eh. We're talking about Honda engines here, parts aren't expensive and the difference in a street car is very minimal. I've rebuilt more than a few d/b-series engines that were neglected and have never seen bearings that needed to be replaced (2 of those d-series engines were over 200k miles too). When you start talking about periods of high heat and extensive abuse, then you should start worrying about using expensive oil.

Hell, even in our drag car (small block Barracuda, running conventional oil) any engine failure we've seen has been unrelated to the oil and we usually get 3-4 seasons out of a motor. The last one went south when it decided to tear one of the main studs out of the block.

I ran some Royal Purple in my H22 and it burnt up so quickly it wasn't even worth it, then again its a H22 with some miles on it. I've heard that the synthetic is for engines with more miles and it has "conditioners" to help against burning oil and to clean some of the gunk. I'm not really sure. I use Mobil 1 myself, and it seems to work just fine.
