Default JDM motor VIN

My brother purchased a 99 civic, and within a couple day it threw a rod. So the guy that we bought the car from (he works at a honda/acura perfomance shop) said he would install a JDM motor in its replacement (D15).

Is there anyway to tell if its truely JDM from the VIN no.?

you dont need to look at the vin number.. just look at the code for example.. all japanese engine codes are d15b or b16a without any numbers after the letters..
usdm: b16a2
Jdm: b16a
Usdm: d15b2
Jdm: d15b

Slightly. USDM B16A2 has 160hp stock, and JDM B16A has 170.

yeah, jdm motors usually have higher compression. because of their lower emission standards. and the availability of higher octane gasoline.

jdm motors tend to have higher compression because they have higher octane gas in japan, and lower emission standards

*Most* JDM engines have no number at the end (X##X instead of X##X#). Some do have the last number, but it's fairly uncommon.

It wont have a VIN period. OBD2 JDM engines do not have VIN tags like the north american ones do, only holes where it looks like a VIN tag should be rivited on.

Not much higher. Japan just uses a different method for figuring out octane rating.
100 Octane according to RON, which they use in Japan, is equivalent to ~95 Octane using our system (RON+MON/2). Premium where I live is 93. So 100 Octane in Japan is really only 2 points higher than our premium.
