Default Oil Pump question

When building a new motor or tearing a motor down after a season do you replace the oil pump or just open it up and check it? Everytime I put a motor together I am buying a new oil pump for that piece of mind. But as I was going through my attic today looking for parts I have about 11 oil pumps up there. Some were used for less then 500 miles.

Do you recommend a new one or just taking one apart and checking it?

Thoughts?

As a friend I would say keep doing what you're doing and put a new one in there, and sell the barely used ones on here to recoup some cash

I guess we got lucky. The single cam used the OEM pump with 216,000 miles on it, just shimmed for high pressure.

Why do you think you need to keep buying oil pumps, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll bet you buy new water pumps too.

Because with my great luck with motors the last thing I need to do is have one fail b/c the oil pump took a ****. And yes I buy a new water pump, timing belt, tensioner, gaskets the whole nine. When I put a new motor together.

When I drop valves depending how late it is I might reuse the autozone headgasket.

Hahahaha, brand new oil pumps, tensioners, belts and an autozone headgasket. You are something else man.

I'm running the oil pump that came with my engine, god knows how many miles is on it. Water pump is new, but they're super cheap.

I use a new pump with every new motor. It's probably more psychological than anything, but my last two motors did have some pretty bad damage and I wasn't sure if any fragments got into the pump. I would rather err on the safe side.

Don't knock the autozone headgasket lasted almost 2 years, with numerous dyno pulls, a ton of passes down the track and not a single issue. My motors didn't even last that long, and we reused it once or twice I forget.

uh yeah oil pump is much more critical than water pump. i don't see how a water pump would fail with such low miles on it.

what cost less?

full engine rebuild and new turbo or an oil pump.

I dont care if i only get 200 miles out of my engine i will replace oil, water pumps every time.

I don't see a water pump failing, oil pumps are a huge issue though. Wouldn't it be the same thing if you changed the gear inside to a pro-drive or equivalent every season.
