Icon2 Wideband sensor location ?

I have a aem uego wideband sensor/gauge. I first installed it on my stock z6 and it read fine. However when i installed it on my turbo setup it now starts out with a stoich reading and after maybe 30 seconds pegs all the way to lean and stays there. I know the instructions say mount it 36" downstream in the exhaust and mine is not quite that far. My ? is is there a ceartin distance of exhaust that has to be run after the sensor? My open downpipe has maybe 2.5" after the sensor is that to short and the sensor picking up air and thus reading lean? Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
