Icon3 Partially deployed airbag? WTF?

My SRS light has been coming on and off at different times for about 2 weeks and I just got in the car to go somewhere and it didn't crank, but my passenger air bag tried to go off. I heard a noise like air seepage and the cover kind of buldged up but it didn't actually deploy.

I disconnected the battery for now, but how do I get the bag out? Now that I don't know what the **** it's going to do, I want to just remove it since it's obviously faulty.
What size resistor will I need if I don't replace it? Do I even need a resistor to be able to drive it without the other going off in my face?

Dealership is over an hour and a half away, and the car won't crank.

So first things first, how do I get it back to crank? Everything lights up but when I try to get it to start, the SRS light just flashes, so I think the ECU thinks the car was in a wreck and it won't start as a safety measure?

If I solve that, could I just pull the fuse and drive it like that temporarily?
Electronics confuse the hell out of me, so how do these guys with aftermarket steering wheels do it?

no, ive driven a car with a deployed/empty airbag before. this is a 5th gen correct?
your starting issue sounds like something else.. is the ECU the original one key'd to the car? and did you check your basics, spark fuel air etc. etc?

Yes, original ECU, 1998.
Basics seem okay.

I can confirm that the car should start w/o the airbag. I've taken mine out (passenger side), and replaced it with a resistor - sorry, forgot what ohm rating it is, but you can find it by searching. In related news, I now have a spare airbag that I can sell to you for cheap, and some spare resistors if you want to go that route.

How do I get the cover off? I have the sides and bottom undone but I can get the top part off.

OH CRAP!! That is why I hate airbags at least it didnt go off in your face!

I know when I disabled mine in my 4th gen there was a little plug to put back in its place when you removed the wire harness from it. Have you tried pulling out the fuses for it? Your car may start with them deployed, but if it thinks that the system is malfunctioned and unsatble its probably keeping you from starting your car and for good reason. I would at least call dealer and see what they say. You deff dont want the other one to go off esp if you are just driving down the road!

Yeah I pulled the fuse but haven't tried restarting it since then. I still haven't actually gotten the bag out since I can't get the cover off.

Okay, that's disconnected, fuse is out. I've loosened that big nut beside the plug along with 3 8mm nuts behind it and it still won't move. What am I missing?

now i know theres ways to buy pass this but when u unplug these air bags... its gonna thorw a nice annoying SRS light (if a partially deployed air bag didnt set it off already lol)

im unsure on the bypass method but look at all the ppl with aftermarket steering wheels and password jdm cf air bag trays... i know i wouldnt stand for no ugly srs light :p lol

I think the resistor should be 9ohms, not sure but I saw this here while I was searching, you'll surely find it here.

How many nuts are there to remove for the bag? I've found 4 and it still won't budge. Had to put this on hold until now, been busy as hell.
