Default can a stock ECU actually go bod for no reason??

it all started last friday. went to lunch at 2 and then at 6 went to go home and no start.
got a fuel system CEL but was getting fuel and no spark. i eliminated the fuel system as the culprit since the pump was working and the injectors were def firing. reset the ecu and still no start, but now with a new cel, #9. leaning towards dizzy now but all components ohmed out correctly and no shorts to ground in the wiring, and getting correct voltage when ignition on. then i started checking everything, wiring, mech timing, etc. everything seems good but still no spark. reset the ecu to see if any new codes were there and to my surprise i now have a TPS CEL and the code 9 is gone. i have continuity from the ECU to the sensor and the sensor voltage is almost spot on (.3v and 4.2) i cleaned all the grounds on the engine, and even tried a known good dizzy.

now i am totally stumped, still no spark still no start. could the ECU have **** it pants?? no mods ever to the ecu its a stock PR4 from a 91 RS

according to the helms i should try a known working ECU. since i dont't have another on on hand i dont want to buy something i may not need

Its highly unlikely, but I have actually seen it happen one time to one of my friends. Some of the capacitors on the board of the ecu burnt up after driving it 30 minutes from his house. But his problem was a little different. He wasnt throwing any codes, and his car wouldnt start, so we figured it was fuel pump.. Fuse ended up blowing for the ecu. We checked the ecu and smoke was rolling out of it. You dont smell anything burnt in the car do you?

no smoke smell. i took the cases off the ECU and looked at everything under a magnifying glass and it looked fine.

i found an old thread where someoe was having the same issues as me and even though the dizzy checked out OK with a multimeter it was still junk.

i picked up a replacement this morning and will see if it works at lunchtime
