I recently bought a 94 dx hatchback. She's not drivable yet, gutted and garage kept. Im in the process of painting her as well as converting my drum brakes to discs. Im not liking the d16 that was in, and im thinkin to go b series. Im thinkin either a b16a or b18c. I will also probably end up putting in new rods pistons and cams. So i was just wondering...

-Where did you all buy your engines from?
-Any feedback from the purchase?
-Is swapping a b series into a car that had an automatic d series engine the same as if it were a 5spd d series engine?

Mine came from a company called sunrise jdm in montreal quebec, I happened the have the distributor apart due to an unrelated no start condition when I did the swap (just forgot to plug in the injectors at the shock tower) and realized the bearing was bad, had another distributor so I just used that, otherwise I never had any trouble with the engine, I don't know a single other person who bought from them though, hmotors is supposed to be a sure thing everytime.

Your question is a little vague. What exactly are you trying to do? Swap in a manual B-series (smartest and easiest idea) or swap in an automatic B-series (absolutely horrible idea for numerous reasons)

im lookin to swap in a manual b18c1.

if i buy from HMO do they send motor mounts? what else parts do i need?

fyi this is my first swap, and my only help is my friend who hates hondas, and his only swap experience is a cop car engine into a 80 something chevy c10... lol

If you purchase motors from these companies, look for a complete swap, axles, ecu, wireharness... Complete swaps are a bit more expensive, then buying a longblock.

 

I try to buy parts locally, usually the cheapest way to get things, plus you don't have to pay for shipping. If the engine is out of the car, its hard to tell if its good, all you can really do is look at the oil, pull the plugs and check those. I've bought a few engines like that and took a chance, it worked out for me.

To swap in a b series your going to need all of the integra mounts, (you will also need a special auto to manual mount for the passenger side, pm me if you want to buy my extra one), integra axles and half shaft, integra engine wiring harness (this will plug into your stock wiring harness at the shock towers), integra shift linkage, and either chip your P28 ecu and convert it to manual or buy a stock OBD1 ecu for the engine your swapping in.

For the auto to manual swap, you will need a stock manual brake pedal, the clutch pedal w/bracket, i think.. The master cylinder and the slave cylinder, and all of the hard lines that run to the transmission.


I had a d15 auto and swapped it with a d16 with manual, and later swapped in a b series, it isnt all that hard, just have to have all of the parts and its all bolt in.

Also, if you plan to run N/A, I would suggest a GSR engine, the b16's just dont have any torque, and it will feel like your d16 till about 6000 rpm's. If you plan on boosting it later down the road you can save a little money by swapping in a non vtec ls engine and boosting that.

You need to have some goals and kind of go from there, good luck.

 

Would just like to add a few things. auto and manual gas pedals are different, seriously, so are the throttle cables, you can use an automatic pedal however if you use the automatic cable. You can reuse you're original harness, but you will need to extend a few connectors to reach certain sensors. lower the lower torque mounts are kind of a hybrid afair, the brackets need to come from a b-series civic or '94 - '01 integra, the rubber mount needs to be reused from the civic.

 

just call hmotors and let them know what you plan on doing and they can help ya out, with any problems, motors come warrenty and start up, mine was super clean and has been running hard the past 30,000 miles motor was super clean inside as well youll be happy with anything from Hmotors personaly i wish i got a h22

 

well theres a 93 civic cx for sale locally. its got a little bit more body work needed, but it has a 5spd engine in (stock d series, 195k miles).

would it be easier to just buy that? i havent exactly done much to this hatch yet, i just pulled the engine and gutted out the cabin.

i dont wanna combine a d series to b series engine swap with a auto to manual swap

 

i had bought mine from tiger japanse and the valve cover was dented and the altenator pulley was bent but other then that started up first try

 

Ive heard alot of bad stuff about tigerjapaneese and osakamotors. Search for both of those topics here. I have only heard good things about hmotorsonline. I got my y7 from hmotors and it still runs like a champ. 2 shops here locally will ONLY order motors from them. Buddy of mine ordered a sr20 from them on a thursday morning but wouldnt have the money til friday. They overnighted the swap, paid for shipping, and sent it with a COD, pending everything looked good and we were ok with the overall apperence of the swap. Hmotorsonline ftw!

 

Honestly if you're already doing an engine swap an auto to manual swap doesn't really add much. But it comes down to what you hate more I guess, personally I hate body work.

 

well im starting night school for auto boy repair in the spring (even though my knowledge is VERY limited right now). so more body work is better for me

 

I purchased an engine through Venus Auto Parts in Sacramento CA; looked pristine and worked perfectly. Rosko and I split up another from HMO; everything in the head I received was the same story.

 

Hmotors is about the best place you can go to get your engine. They are not the cheapest, but they have the best rep. If you go to their site, it tells you everything they include with each engine/package.

I could have sworn I just used the original gas pedal, interesting. I may have had to use different throttle cables, it was so long ago I don't remember. I don't know what you mean about the lower torque mounts, i just used integra everything with the swap.

OP: You said you don't want to combine d to b and do the auto to manual, thats fine, although its really not that much work if you want to do it =P On the cx, thats up to you, its going to have the non vtec engine in it if that matters to you. 195k miles might be high depending on how well the engine was maintained.

 

i got my B16a2 from Hmotors and it is a great motor. the only problem i had with it was the headgasket needed to be replace cuz it was leaking oil. but when i took the head off it was so clean i couldn't believe it! looked like there was only like 20k on the motor, i live in maryland and it only cost me 2160.oo shipped to my house. came with ECU, wire harness (which i couldn't use though because it was backwards), trans, IM, Alternator, PS pump, and it even came with a halfshaft. and the studs and brackets for mounts were there to. there a pretty godd company and offer a 30 day start up warranty and replace any broken sensors if any. i would strongly suggest buying from them. I've always used hmotorsonline.com for all of my motors,they can include a mount kit for extra if needed. My motor shipped fast and had no broken sensors,etc. I got my B16A long block from H-T member Benbuilt4u,great price and good guy to deal with although I haven't talked to him in quite a while.

 

i jus purchased my b16a1 swap and jdm front end conversion for my 91 ef9 from elite imports in north philly... they start the motor for you upon arrival and basically have jdm heaven inside their huge warehouse of thousands of parts... id highly recommend them

 

I got my B18B1 swap from a company called LKQ 650-engine, 1000-trans. i then bought a B16A2 head on ebay, plan to do ls/vtec.
