is 4.9 an overkill for ek4 stock gearbox?

I have the 4.785 final drive on my EG6 and 5th gear is pretty much my cruising gear. If I had more power I could probably obtain a higher top speed but after 170 kp/h there's really not much left however I also haven't tried to go any faster....

I wish I had a 4.9 final. That'd be a blast as I don't use the car for drag racing or top speed runs anyways.

the 4.9 would be really high on it man i mean it would be good for dead stop racing which is what i'm into .. I know the 4.40 fd's on my buddies b16 he had in his eg he topped around like 130 or so.. but I mean, the 4.78 would be a good tranny... Honestly what are you wanting to do with the car.. (street race, drag race, cruise?).. just really according to what your wanting ..

hahaha with a 4.9 on the highway... well let me put it this way with my 4.7 im at around 5000 at 65 or so give or take a coupe hundred... i cant cruise over 70 or my vtec wants to scream at other drivers. if ur looking for just street there is no reason to even lose the 4.4 u have now but if u were gonna swap ide say no more than the 4.7.

probably somewhere in between 6300-7400 RPMS.

Top speed all depends on aero dynamics, tires, power, weather, etc.

However I would venture to say you wouldn't see over 115 mp/h with that final drive.

If you're just using the car for the street stay with the 4.40 final.

4.9s are strictly for road racing scenarios....like dude said, with 4.9 gears you would probably be cruising at 6k rpm at 70mph and getting 15mpg...

4.4 is better...more realistic I should say. s80 w/LSD and ls 5th FTW!
