Default weird problem, lost speedo AND vtec at same time

so i have a 97 jdm type r swap in a 97 integra with all the corresponding jdm ecu and wiring. all done correctly. it has ran perfect for over a year now. today i was driving a little spirited and banged second gear. immediately the speedo went nuts. so i thought no big deal i have another speedo sensor in my garage off a old tranny. then i went to climb in the higher rpms and realized vtec wouldn't engage. this has me a little stumped and i can't run my scan tool on it because it wont read the jdm ecu. anyone seen anything like this happen before. i haven't had a chance to replace the speedo sensor because its already dark out. i'm really hoping that the ecu isn't screwing up

Take a look at the connector for the VSS plug.. sometimes one of the prong bends or from corrosion breaks off..

do you think this would cause the vtec engagement issue as well?

vtec only engages if

temp warmed up
speed over 20ks
no cels detected
oil pressure(only on some)

So if your speed wasnt reading correctly or you had a cel this would stop vtec.
