Default The infamous 3rd gear

Recently my 3rd gear has been grinding on my 00 gsr. I recently switched my clutch master cylinder because it was leaking, and changed the tranny oil. The grinding stopped a little bit but unless i baby it, it'll grind. I found that when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, if i shift real fast into the gate of the 3rd gear, and then slowly let it slip in, then it won't grind. While all of this is going on, i hear clicking noise when depressing the clutch pedal on first gear. it sounds like it's coming from the tranny because when i researched on it, i don't feel the click on my foot on the clutch pedal like others. I'm no mechanic so i was wondering what you guys think the problem may be. Maybe clicking noise is coming because of an exhaust leak, or possibly the clutch? or could it be the syncros? thanks in advance

oh really? do u have any idea how much it cost around? i called a shop called "American Transmissions" and they said they charged 150 i think only for labor. and then the rest is the cost of the parts. i feel like that's too cheap. any idea of they are trustworthy?

Its a real easy job, if you can take your gearbox off and put it back on youll be able to work with the internals of the gearbox.

Dont know what the price there is but for a 3rd gear syncro pack it costs about 200NZD here.

and takes apart a hour to pull the box apart and put back together.

Its pretty easy to replace the synchros. Just follow the manual. If you look at the manual and still dont feel comfortable then take it to the shop. It doesnt take that long that is why the labor was quoted so cheap. What was it quoted for? 3 hours? Anyways I would look into some gearspeed carbon coated synchros I used them before and was quite happy with them.

sounds like that is about right, it took xpert a day to do mine

i paid just under 300 for mine, that was labor and parts

bad news
i drove by the show today and i saw a sign reading "Under New Management"
so im guessing the prices arent the same

i would say trust the shop, dont attempt to do it yourself unless you a competent mechanic

thats just my input tho

thanks. i talked to a mechanic and he said that since the syncro isn't fully out, just keep on using it until its necessary to change it. but i thought if i didn't change it immediately, it could damage other parts. But he said the syncro wearing out won't damage any other part in the tranny. Should i wait it out?

Have you tried changing out your tranny fluid to GM Friction Modified Synchromesh or Penzoil Synchromesh yet? It'll put a bandaid on your grinding issue. You'll be surprised how well this stuff works.

About the clicking... my pedal was clicking before and it turned out to be the clutch slave cylinder being bad. Changed it, and no more clicking. I'm not saying its exactly what you must be experimenting, but just something to check.

i did change the fluid but with honda mtf. the grinding has stopped but i have to shift it slowly after i put it in the gate of the 3rd gear. but how long could the car run for until it'll become necessary to get it change? wouldn't it damage the gear when it gets worse?

It shouldnt, just ride it out. When it complete wears out, you wont even be able to shift into the gear. I had that syncro problem with 2 of my old honda's. G luck

It can be completly gone and shifting will still be fine, Just be sure to rev match. Or force it hard enough and it will go in with a big crunch.

Reverse gear doesn't have a syncro and you can still get into it, It will just be like that apart from the winding noise because the other gears arnt stright cut.

Me and my mates built a box with out syncro's for our thrash car and after awhile you can shift fine with out any crunchs, But there a skill to it.

alright, thanks u guys! imma just ride it out and keep on shifting slowly until the syncro finally wears out. i decided that when it is time to change it out, imma just buy a syncro set because shifting from 1st to 2nd gear isn't too smooth either or 4th to 5th. I can feel like they're starting to wear down, just hasn't started grinding yet. I was also thinking of replacing the clutch too. i just hope the syncro will wear out quickly so i can finally get it fixed!
