96 Civic Ex Engine Dieing need to replace but confused and not sure what to get
I have a 96 Civic Ex Sedan Automatic and my d16y7 engine is burning oil and I need a new engine. I initially wanted to get a JDM D15B Vtec or d16Z6 but I was told that if my original engine did not have Vtec it would be difficult and a waste of money to get an engine with Vtec. The weird thing is that i thought all 96 civic's came with a d16y8 which has Vtec but for some reason I have a d16y7 non Vtec. If it turns out that I cant get an engine with Vtech what is the best engine I can get with around $700. I was looking at the D15B non Vtec but im not sure how much horsepower that has?
All D series are interchangable
except D17. D15B would be a decent swap,a Z6 would be better-wire in v-tec and run EX-D16y8ECU,or just buy the D16y8 and don't use v-tec....If it were me,which I have D16y7and buildingY8, and you want to stay D series,I would take the $700 and rebuild my D. You would have plenty of extra money to maybe slap on a Y8 head,ECU...etc. But as far as junk yards or someone that has done a B-swap...D15/16's are easily purchased for way under $700!!

no the only civics that came with vtec in 96 were the ex coupes and sedans. and it is not that hard to wire in the vtec...look at the engine swap sticky at the top of the 92-00 civic forum.
that is where you will find all your info.
then what would be the point of getting the y8?

He said his didn't come with the y8...someone has already swapped?
...guess he needs to check his ECU...P2E=Ay7 or P2P=Ay8, he could have a y7 bottom end,y8head,+/or vtec sensor laying to side...go back and read before you criticize me!

OP: go look around and see if you have some wires laying around near the head. if you have 2 or 3 plugs just laying around...then you have a vtec wiring harness...which means the y8 will drop straight in with no modification at all.
if i were to get a d15b non vtec, how much horsepower would it have because I am aware that there are alot of different types out there. As i said i have a d16y7 right now if i swapped it for the d15b would there be a significant amount in speed loss that i would notice while driving?
