battery relocation.. what do u think?
hey guys im about to relocate my battery to the rear/trunk. i have a 93 hatch and i really want to do it but im starting to look into it and i see many ppl talk about how the battery gases out while the vehicle is running. is it safe to reroute my battery to the rear? i was also planning on purchasing an odyssey pc680 i beleive sealed battery for safety purposes. also if anyone has actually do this mod can u show pic? thanx greatly appreciated.
i had a friend cut a hole in my spare wheel well and welded a box that hangs down 4 inches. then i went to autozone and bought a breather filter for $12. i drilled a hole from underneath the car, ran a tube into the box, sealed it, and attached the breather on. a guy that owns an electronic shop and relocates batteriesw for a living told me that it would be efficient.
the oddyssey batteries are gel instead of liquid so that is ok if you are wanting to place it inside your vehicle. I wouldnt put it into your truck though because you loose polarity due to the fact that you are going to introduce 5-6feet addition ground/power cable to relocate it to your trunk. i would place it somewhere closer to the terminals to allow shorter extension. there is room in the passenger fender well area that people buy/makes brackets for. Lookup the shaved tucked thread and there are many links and pics for relocating your battery
i've also heard that if you relocate it to anywhere else but the bay you need an external shut off switch if you ever to go a track

if you drag your car then you hafta have a battery cutoff switch. i not sure about HPDE or roadracing, but im sure its the same. just put it into your bay

you do realize polarity has to do with positive and negative right?
To mount the battery in the trunk/hatch area you have to run a decent sized wire to handle the current over the extended distance. But 2awg or even 4awg can handle it. (2 or larger to be safe)
The batteries location and if a protective box is required for the battery depends on the goal of the relocation and the rules associated with the type of racing you're going to do.

You CAN do it but you will need larger than 4gauge wire in most cases to have it work efficiently. If you are looking into spending a lot on a battery just to have it sealed why not just order the tiny battery that password jdm sells with the relocation kit so you could just hide the battery somwhere under the hood.
Just my 2cents.
I did however have 3 cars that all had the battery relocated to the trunk with no problems but I did have optima batteries so they didn't leak any fumes or anything like that.

i know nhra rules for drag racing say that if you relocate the battery to the trunk, you have to fabricate a firewall of so think steal or aluminum sheeting and completely seal it off from the cab.
this is done sot hat if there is a build up of hydrogen gas, it doesnt blow up from a small spark or static electricity.
although there is places that do make sealed batt boxes that are nhra approved and just have a vent to the underside of the car.

whereever you decide to mount it, i would try to keep it in some sort of battery box. will keep the dirt grim, and things that may crack the casing. optimas do die if you wear a hole in the bottom and the gel dries up.

okay so i ended up going to passwordjdm in pico rivera since i live not that far and i bought the odyssey battery. part number pc680 with the tray.. damn that was xpensive. ive been reading up sum more on it and since its a dry cel battery its sealed doesnt need maintenance and it doesnt gas out like the regular brick batterys. im gona mount it in the rear with the regular 4 guage wire to the starter and the 10 guage wire to the fuse box. im doing a whole wire tuck on the headlight harness, brake fluid wires and the windshield wiper wires, as well as an engine harness tuck with the heater core still in place and the battery too.. it has a mini me swap wich im still working on. ill keep u guys posted with pics.
i did the mod to my old crx... i dont have any pics but its pretty easy to do...
i used a yellow top Optima battery. and welt to wallmart and got the battery cover for boats and crap. the just did the simple wiring and mounted it down.
