Need some advice on oil for two separate motors, what should/shouldn't I run in the following:

*D16A7 - stock currently on Castrol Magnetec 10W-40 (semi-synthetic)
Stick with current oil
Mobil XHP Super 20W-50 (Mineral)
Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 (Synthetic)
Castrol GTX 20W-50 (Mineral)
Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (Synthetic)
>car is a daily runner with occasional long trips and no racing what-so-ever

*B18B3 - Filter & Exhaust currently on Helix Ultra 5W-40 (Synthetic)
Stick with current oil
Mobil1 0W-40 (Synthetic)
Castrol Magnetec 10W-40 (semi-synthetic)
Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 (synthetic)

Please bear in mind that the climate in South Africa allows for temps of between -2 & 25 degrees celcius in winter and 10 & 40 degrees celcius in summer.

thats nice to know but frankly ordering oil is a pain... especially if for some reason it goes on backorder for a month and you cant get it.

I run castrol 5w 30 syntec in my JDM B16 and it works well for my driving style. (DD with occasional track visits and freeway pulls ) Im no formula one racer lol.

The key is to make sure you stick to the SAME oil and dont change from it.

I know MANY MANY honda tuners running 600+whp setups and they like syntec or royal purple.

This is the first time I'm hearing of the Nippon Oils & they look like quality.
We unfortunately do not get Syntec or Nippon here in South Africa, Royal Purple is almost twice the price of Mobil1 and that's already expensive at R350 per 4litres(sorry, don't know the conversion).

Agreed!

That's why I run:

- Mobil 1 10W-30 "High Mileage" synthetic motor oil (available everywhere)
- Red Line MT-90 synthetic tranny fluid (available at local speed shops)
- Purolator PureONE oil filters (available at Pep Boys)

Just be careful WHICH ONE you buy! Copy n' paste time...

- Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy
- Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy
- Mobil 1 0W-40
- Mobil 1 5W-20
- Mobil 1 5W-30
- Mobil 1 10W-30
- Mobil 1 15W-50
- Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30
- Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40
- Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-30 for Gasoline Engines
- Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 for Diesel Engines

IMHO, Mobil 1 "High Mileage" 10W-30 & Mobil 1 "TDT" 5W-40 is where most 1992-2000 CiViC owners should be (for the reasons mentioned in the link above)...

91 CIVIC D15 - ROYAL PURPLE
94 CIVIC D15B - ROYAL PURPLE

I have never had an issue with any of these cars running this oil. I get a good price on it through my workplace, but I also run my oil changes longer than what I did with the Mobil 1. I would change every 3 K with the Mobil 1, and now I change the filter every 3 K, and on the 94 + the TEG we change every 6 K, but the other two don't get changed for 12 K so it's worth the money over the long haul. I still change filters every 3 K on all of my cars (K&N filters) but without question the Royal Purple has helped with oil burn in my 91, and the 94 runs significantly cooler in combination with my low temp thermostat in the summer months! If you can't get Royal, go Mobil, but hands down I think the Royal Purple is the ****!

Ya, I'm a supporter of Red line. I'm up here in N. Cali. however Red lines expensive, so I'm running Royal Purple 10-30 in my B7. Alot of folks laugh at me, but they use castrol GTX which I can't stand. I was running it for aminute in my Honda but it just doesnt stand up. Red line 10-40 is in my trans and I'm sticking with the Royal Purple for cost reasons. It's about the same performance as Red line IMHO.

I've used Redline premix on my RX7's for years(oil metering blocked off of course) This last year I sold the last rotary and am a singlecammerjammer now. Lower cost and less drama IMHO

 

i have read some bad things about royal purple i always use what the stealership uses ... castrol for me...

 

i say non-synthetic.

synthetic oils have more solvents that break down seals and components more quickly. they are also more prone to leaking, because they have more detergents and are slippery-er.

haynes manual says 5w-30 i believe. if you want to be on the safe side, go 10w-30.

i like Rotella T.

higher viscosity and weight lead to more engine drag and slightly less power. we are talking ever so slightly, if you're not racing competitively, it doesn't make a difference.
