Oil seal replacement. z6 civic

Default Oil seal replacement. z6 civic

I'm leaking oil from behind the ac/ps pulley and I purchased a new crank shaft oil seal for that side. Whats the best way to go about doing this.

I've heard it sucks to get that pulley off. and then what? I just want to know before running into something unexpected.

Thanks for any help. How do I get that plate/ cover off after the pulley?
The plate is labeled number 7 and the oil seal i have is number 33.

To replace the front crank seal (part #33), you will want to

1.
Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. Search this site for hints. See sites like http://honda.lioness.googlepag...tools for more hints, or just ask what is the quickest way, and I (and I am sure others) can give you suggestions consistent with your wallet and tools. It's a good idea to figure out how you will free this bolt one weekend and then do the rest of the job another weekend, say. At least, for me, figuring out how to free it was a big job by itself the first time I changed my Civic's timing belt.


2.
Follow the directions for replacing the timing belt. See http://media.honda.co.uk/car/o...1.pdf and ask questions here if you get stuck.

3.
Keep pulling off parts from the crankshaft (taking careful notes) until you see the seal. Everything frees pretty easily, though the first time one does this, hiccups are bound to happen. Have the new seal in hand so you know what you're looking for. I use a corkscrew to get a good grip on the seal, twisting the corkscrew to force the seal out. I also use plastic sheet (cut from a plastic soda bottle) to slide the new seal on, using a little oil where surfaces contact during the installation. I make a cylinder from the plastic sheet, insert it into the new seal, then slide the whole shebang over the crankshaft end. After removing the plastic, I use a washers and socket wrenches to tap the new seal in place. 4.
Consider replacing the camshaft oil seal, water pump and tensioner while you are in there.

Thanks for the help. I'll be working on this tomorrow. I have no idea why its leaking from there when the engine was just rebuilt and machined a month ago

I would have to know more about what the rebuild entailed, but it could be simply that they were just sloppy when it came to installing the seal. It's a very distinct step in a rebuild, and it is easy to mess up if a person is rushing.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!! NOTE THE <---FR in the pic (it means the direction of the front of the car).
#33 is the REAR MAIN SEAL (tranny & flywheel have to be removed to replace it). If the OP means the front crank seal then he needs to look at these other part diagrams.
#20 is the camshaft seal - 91213-PD2-004 OIL SEAL (29X45X8) (ARAI) $3.47, but I don't see a front crank seal (unless it is considered part of #1 the timing belt cover, which I doubt because of the timing belt location to the cover) - 11811-P08-010 COVER, TIMING BELT (LOWER) $36.57, or #4 the timing cover seal -11831-P08-000 RUBBER, SEAL (LOWER) $22.18.



Here is the crank/piston parts view, and I don't see a seal there either.

#12 is the timing gear guide 13622-PM3-020 PLATE, TIMING BELT GUIDE $4.33

SO IMHO I bet you just need to change the oil pan gasket #6 in th OP's pic - 11251-P01-004 GASKET, OIL PAN (OTSUKA) $20.88
and the lower timing cover seal to fix your leak.
#4 in 1st pic - 11831-P08-000 RUBBER, SEAL (LOWER) $22.18

Update - the oil pump parts view has the seal #17

91212-P2F-A01 OIL SEAL (31X46X7) $3.89

wrong seal dude. #33 is the rear main you need the front main. Those generally don't leak so you might want to double check that by taking off the timing cover.

I don't need the camshaft seal. Its leaking right behind that pulley. So what seal do I actually need?

Oh okay I gotcha. That makes sense that its a oil pan seal, b/c there is a little oil around it.

If you are looking for the front crank seal you need to look at the exploded view of the oil pump assy. Its number 17 in this link.

Just confirming that TheJGB and instructor are right about your originally having identified the rear crank seal in the drawing. As they noted, at OEM parts sites, go to the oil pump drawing to find the front crank seal.

I too noticed the front orientation on the drawing etc. and then went looking for another crank seal shown on the timing belt side of the engine. I forgot the front seal is shown on the oil pump drawings.

It seems to me that the lower timing cover is mostly a dust cover and general protector for the timing belt. The lower timing cover seal at most is a temporary backup for the front crank seal and maybe the oil pan gasket. If oil is leaking down the engine block on the driver's side, it is going to be from the front crank seal, the oil pan gasket, or maybe the valve cover gasket.

Because of discussion at another forum, I am now in the habit of replacing the front crank seal and the cam seal every other timing belt change. They are cheap enough, and the labor is intense enough to get to them that doing them during a TB change pays for itself, IMO.

The rear crank seal seems to fail less often. At least, both my Civics are on their original rear crank seals with no signs of oil leakage.

My motor is leaking. I just got new oil pan seal and it stop a bit. Now its leaking again from the tranny. Any reason why and where its coming from?
