gelcoat vs. clear coat
whats up guys? I have a carbon fiber hood and roof spoiler that i need to get recleared. which do you think would be the better choice, cost not an issue.
Go with a gelcoat which i think would be the best way, or just a nice Automotive clear coat?
Thank you

you need to reclear it. but you need to get a clearcoat that has u.v additive agents in it to make sure it doesnt fade again. Dupont cromaclear, dupont cromapremier, Ppg's top line brand, sikkens. basf. Most of the clearcoats that production shops use or shops that just use cheap *** material do not have the u.v additives in them and your c/f will crack and fade again later down the road. Just make sure your use a good clear with protectants. Prep it, spray 2-3 coats, let it dry for a day or two to let the c/f absorb as much material as possible to fill the pores. Than reprep and spray again. if you use a good clear like the ones i mentioned youll never have a problem with the c/f fading, yellowing or cracking again.

Thats the info i was looking for, much appreciated sir. The gel coat is wicked expensive, but i figured it would last much longer and be a little more durable that an automotive clear. But you "cleared" (Ha) things up for me.

you can't just shoot gelcoat over faded gelcoat and expect it to look good, its take days to wetsand the gelcoat to get it alright looking.. clearing it is the best bet..

This is sooo true. I had a customer try to fix his own carbon fiber bumper by re-gelcoating it. He wanted me to sand it down for him. I just lol'ed at him and declined. It would have taken probally 10 good hours and it still would not have been too smooth. Only use gel coat when you shooting it against a mold surface
