driving with check engine light on
I was on last week about the check engine light. Most suggested it was the 02 sensor or the cat. Since it was cheaper to replace the second 02 sensor, I tried it this weekend. I couldn't get it off using 2 hands and a breaker bar. I would guess it is the original, 10 yrs old.
What happens if I drive the car with the light on?

Nothing happens unless the problem becomes a danger to the engine, then it will blink and go into a limp/derate mode, limiting the RPM's. See if any parts stores will check the code for you. If it's a 5th gen. you plug it in down on the passenger side. The port is located under a panel covered in carpet. It took me a little while to find mine, the parts store guys didn't' know where it was. Get the code and they should have a table to tell what it means, or just write it down and ask here.
There is also some way to jump it with a paperclip and get a readout. I've never tried it before. I drive with my CEL on, can't get rid of it. I've got a transmission code coming up but nothing seemingly wrong at all with my trans.. Get it checked and find out what it is for sure, that's what it's there for.

i have a cel due to a test pipe. also there is a tool that you can rent for free at autozone with a deposit that is designed to take out the 02 sensors
