Default Engine Light

im still learning how to drive my car(manual). I was driving uphill in this abandoned parking lot and i just over and over again..u know how the process goes, the engine goes dead blah blah. so after the last time the engine goes dead the engine light comes on and i tell my parents and they go and give it to the shop. so the shop calls back the today and says the bill will be $1700. some reason i dont belive this.

You should check the code for the CEL(check engine light). The code is a number that tells you what the problem is. Search CEL or check engine light or CEL code to find out exactly how to do it (I've never had to). Did you notice any problem when driving after the light came on?
