Default JDM S1 transmission 5K RPM at 80MPH

I just swapped a JDM B16A and matching S1 cable transmission into my CRX. The only unexpected thing was the crazy high RPMs on the freeway. I am running 205/15/50 tires and at 80MPH the engine is rotating at about 5000 RPMs. Anyone know if all cable JDM S1 transmissions are geared this low?

It's great...except for on the freeway. Anything more than 10 minuets on the freeway and I start thinking about LS 5th gear sets and MFactory 4.05 final drives.

Go punch that ratio into the gear calc.... not favorable for anything except trying to do 200 mph.

Whoa, yeah. You are right on that one. 200mph hummm...maybe not. But seriously 5k RPM with a free-flowing exhaust = headache.

What is the tallest gearing i could realistically put on my 89 CRX SI w/ a SOHC ZC?

I've got the stock 4.25 FD and the Si Tranny in there, which is about 3k at 70 RPM in 5th gear, I'd like to get it to about 2k RPM at 70 with maybe an HF fifth gear, would that be possible?

I have a 92 VX and I get about 1900-2000 at 70MPH. You could use the gearsets from one of those, or an HF tranny I think they might be even longer than that. Too lazy to look at my D-Tranny bible.

Yeah I have the same exact tranny on my B18C1. Kinda sucks. i heard that you can change the final gear drive, but I am not 100% sure from which one. I'm looking to contact gear speed for this.

I know what you mean. My brother drives in 3rd and 4th gear on the freeway. I never see him shift to 5th.

I've read that the USDM S1 tranny is supposed to be better? I have one for sale if anyone is interested.

The usdm S1 is an LS transmission.

I've got the same setup in my 91 rex, and had the same setup in my old DA with an obd0 b16 swap. You do get used to it over time, but the gas mileage sucks due to being at that high of an rpm.

I swapped in the USDM LS 5th into my S1 tranny in 02-03. It is great. Two years ago I drove to the Tail of the dragon (7 hour trip). On that trip I got 40mpg highway. That is with JDM b16 CTR cams and pistons, AEM intake, custom exhaust, high flow cat. The short 1-4 is great for autocross and sport driving, but the ls fifth is like an overdrive. Unfortunately you can no longer get the gear set from Honda so good luck finding one.

just one question (I have the same tranny) where are you driving 80mph? the interstate? you could try reducing your speed a bit. I try to keep mine at or under 70mph.

One more thing, I changed clusters from stock to a vti (the european model)
and at 70 on the old tach it would read 4000 rpm the new one reads 3800 rpm, so I checked the tach readout against the hondata datalog and the new tach was pretty close the old on was off 200 rpm or so. I'm sure you already know how accurate/inaccurate these stock tachs are.

I also had the same tranny on my LS before I did a vtec head. Even at 70 it can be annoying. I just got a different transmission all together, but cable b-sieres transmissions are beginning to be hard to find...at least here on the east coast they are. I was also annoyed at the topping out at 105 (6.8k red line on LS). I think the best tranny for this if you can find it is a YS1 cable. You can swap any hydro gears into it. Couldn't tell you what I'm running right now as the little sticker is gone but it does much better on the highway. If I had the chance I think it would top at 125 (6.8k).

I also found a half fix for this problem....loud stereo

Leave it as it is, honda designed this gearing for a reason, and it would be that the only thing that makes our cars quick is the gearing, try putting taller gears on a b16 and you might as well put a single cam back in it.

I've had a JDM S1 bolted to a b18b in my crx for 2 years now just about and i love it to death. Yes it does rev at 4900 rpms at 80mph in 5th gear but and still get about 30-35mph beating the living crap out of it most of the time that i drive it.

Creator- You sure your speedo is working right?? 105mph at 6800 rpm's sounds a bit low to me. I absolutely positively have a JDM S1 with all stock gearing in it and i can touch 118mph at 7000 rpm's in 5th, and i've done this countless times with other cars along side me verifying my speed. I know you should'nt rev and LS this high all the time blah blah blah, but nobodys gonna convince me other wise because like i said i've had this thing goin for 2 years now and it won't die. although i'm sure someday it will.
