JDM S1 tranny. I am trying to change out 5th gear. Need help.
I have the S1 tranny. I pulled it apart the other day and installed a quaife LSD. No real problem. I have read before that the Integra 5th gear will swap into this tranny. I ordered just 5th gear for main and counter shaft from the 93 ls (Honda said the 90-92 gear was discontinued). Well the syncro sleeve is a different size so the gears alone will not work. I know this has been done. Do I have to order the gear set? If so what is the part number? Any info will help, I travel on the Highway to work and I would like to improve the mpg's.
Thanks for the help.

if this statement is true then you are pretty much SOL. only 90-91 Integra gears will work in JDM Cable J1/S1/Y1 trannies. you need a 90-91 Integra 5th. 92+ integra trannies use larger mainshafts and the synchro sets are quite a bit different.

It's 90-91 Integra 5th gear and counter gear you need. NOT!!! the 92-93 Integra LS gears. The 92-93 Integra is the YS1 tranny which has a larger shaft than the S1 tranny.
Looks to be available from http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org. I haven't heard of parts being discontinued what dealer is this?

Thanks for the help guys. I IM'd you. Let me know if I am off on the price. I will try to take some pictures before I close the tranny back up to show others how to install the LSD and gears. Now I just have to learn how to post pictures.
For the S1 tranny, the 90-91 Integra tranny components do work? I have to rebuild mine within the next month. I was told that depending on the tranny that came with your B16a, the 90-91 internals may or may not work.

JUST the 5th gear and counter gear? No more seals, no more gaskets, no shims, nothing?
If so I'll be doing this soon
And can anyone identify for me which gears from the diagrams I'd be needing? I'm a n00b to transmission internals

Yes, Can someon please look up and have part #'s for exactly what we need. I know a lot of ppl want to do this, but I for one dont know very much about the inside of a tranny.
The parts computer calls out:
23581-ps1-a00 5th gear main shaft
23461-ps1-a01 5th gear counter shaft
These are for the 1990 integra ls

the 5th gear in every b-series tranny is at the top of both gear shafts. you only have to pull the 5th gear to do the swap but you do have to unbolt the nut on the main shaft in order to get the 5th main gear off.
Excellent... thanks for the info
So drain the tranny, pull the tranny, pull the top case, unbolt the nut on the main shaft, remove the 5th and counter, slide the new 5th and counter in place, replace nut to torque and Loctite, replace case, replace transmission, fill, and done!
Correct?
Looks like Acura is getting a call this afternoon

i would say pulling and replacing the case can be the trickiest part because of that damn C-ring that holds the main shaft in place. but you've got the rest of it.
Ahhh, so there's a C-ring.. another thing to look out for
Thanks again! Looks like I'll be studying the Helms tonight

There is also a bolt that holds the reverse idle gear in place. If you don't remove it then the upper case will hang up when you try to remove it. The reverse idle gear sits in a shift fork and you can't split the case. If you remove that bolt and the spread the C ring with two screw drivers it will open up no prob. Just pay attention to the location for everything. You will have to remove the shift forks and linkage to pull the main and counter shafts out. good luck

Update for anyone interested in pricing out the costs:
23581-ps1-a00 is $119.99 -> (main gear)
23461-ps1-a01 is $77.97 --> (countershaft gear)
Prices in CDN funds... so about $80 for the main, $60 for the counter, $140 total, brand new parts
I'll be ordering soon since I haven't seen any trashed LS trannies around where I live!

Hey HUGHESL,
Are you Rob's friend from OHIO that sent me an email in regards to this?
If you are, did you ever get my reply?
If you arent, then nevermind.

Rob forwarded an email. You said it is possible to get premature syncro wear with this gear swap and If I was that concerned with fuel economy I shouldnt do this swap anyway. I understand that view point. I look at this like having my cake and eating it too. I should be able to reduce syncro wear by rev matching before shifting into/out of 5th. I understand the ls will not make good power because of the RPM it will run at, but I don't need tons of power on the highway. By the time I hit fifth I am just cruzing to work. Your email said Honda is not stupid and they don't just throw gears together and slap them into a tranny. That is also true, however the max speed limit in Japan is 55mph. And most driving is city. This allows for a different gear set up than one that is made to be sold in the US.
I am open for more discussion on this. I would be interested to hear input from others that have done this swap as well.
