Default CRV... Dropped 2MPG

2000 CRV 183k miles very well maintained had just gotten new plugs, wires, cap & Rotor plus 4 new tires and the Maintenance schedule is up to date.

About 1.5 months ago I changed the Fuel filter. That's all, nothing else. Between my wife and I we drive it about 5 tanks per month with equal driving for City and Freeway. Almost immediately it seemed to have lost 2MPG.

This is with 2 different drivers with consistent driving habits and is in no way a mental.

Any Ideas of the Cause?

Might have an o2 sensor going south then. Really there are so many variables it's like picking a needle out of a haystack to pick it out without a check engine light.

I drive a SUV as well one thing I realized is that where I fill is important. (Quality of gasoline)

I filled up at some local spot and achieved about 240 to a tank

@ Sunoco 270-300

@ BP 250-270

It does have a faulty rear O2 but The rear O2 doesn't' control fuel or timing so I don't know why that would affect it.

It just started with a new symptom.

Loss of power
And it's missing when it's first started and sometimes on braking.

Both new symptoms are speratic and I can't make them happen at will nor do they happen every time the car is started.

What kind or spark plugs? If it's anything but NGK and Honda wires/ cap take that stuff off and throw it all away.
Put the old wires back on it and get a new Honda cap, rotor and plugs.

on top of what ross said, which is dead on, you need to do a valve adjustment every 30K on the gen 1 crv.

Is there a tech link on the valve adjustment?

Also, MPG just dropped even more to 300miles on this tank.

Edit: Is this correct and will it apply to my CRV?

Edit again! lol

Is there a technique to gutting a the Catalytic Converter or do I just disconect and ram a few small pipes through it? " I'm aV8 guys wadda ya expect, "

I changed my plugs again Although the plugs were only 3 months old they were trashed white and had about .50 worth of gap. I about crapped my pants. Autolites suck!

I also adjusted the valve lash. Now they really noisy. Is this normal to here the discernible chatter?

yes. They get tight over time and need to be adjusted every 30k. Auto light does suck. OEM or NGK set to stock gap only.

Tonight I'm going to be picking up a 00 crv with 65k on it.

I'll have to test out the first 5 full tanks and let you know what I average. The car has recently had it's tune up.

Are you serious Sxynerd?
You from Bay Shity? Damn, I thought I was the only one that called it that.
That's my hometown also. LoL.

Sorry to hear about your fuel problems.

Why don't you tell us how much gas mileage you're getting?

I got a 99' CR-V EX, and I'm only getting around 24mpg city/hwy driving.
Mines a 5speed also.

Mine likes premium gas better also. I put 87' in there one day, and lost a bunch of power.
I had it like that for about a week, until I could get in a fresh tank of 93' gas.

I think that gas stations are ripping people off on gallons, because of the lower prices.
I put in gas like I normally would, and now when it's near E, It fills up like 13.5 gallons now.
I thought it was just me, but it does it like that on my Integra also, and I know that my Integra only has a 13 gallon tank. LoL.

So as far as testing gas mileage goes, I don't care. I'm just glad gas prices came down.
