Default burning oil. smoke....timing???

as most of u kno. i jus replaced my head gasket. done right. im sure. even had a friend come down a torque everything for me in the right sequence. started it up bout 2 days ago. i did the timing my self to the best that i could. yesterday i had some thermostat problems. taken car of. as of rite now the car has no thermostat and is cooled by water. so i went out today to fire it up and i smell oil burning. i pop the hood and right ther from right under where my d16z6 manifold meets the y pipe i see nothing but constant smoke coming up. could TIMING cause this problem. could it still be fixed or have i possibly meesed up valves. i have only driven it for a total of -1 mile and the car has not seen passed 3k rpm since i drove it home 1 month ago. please help me.

Timing isn't the (main) issue here.

You said it's still overheating. Start with solving that. Either you left air in the system when refilling, or you botched up the headgasket install.

Did you make sure that the head and block were not warped?

yea. it's not overheating anymore. it was a bad thermostat. thats y it was overheating. now i jus gotta worry bout that smoke coming from my manifold. im sure it cud be the gasket that goes on the manifold. but why is it smoking is my question. this car still has to pass emmisions. could timing be causing my car to burn oil/smoke. or could i already have messed up valves?

it might just be excess oil from when you were working on it. try let it run and see if it burns off.

that crossed my mind.but it's coming exactly from the connection of the manifold and the y pipe. so im thinking its coming out of the exhaust ports and jus getting out of the manifold from where i did not replace the gaskets. (which i am gonna replace, jus not now for testing purposes (mistake))
but why is it smoking in the first place.?

maybe water in the piping if the car's been sitting. you should try let it run for a while and if it keeps doing it then i would look into something bigger like maybe your rings.

it smells like oil burning. it's very obvious. u think maybe rings? so advanced or delayed timing would have nothing to do with this?i jus began to see it today. it's never done that before. and today is day 3 since the new headgasket and initial startup

so you've been driving the car for 3 days and today you notice it smoking? i'd say after you replace the gaskets and its still smoking then repost with the status and a little more detail of the problem and we can help you from there.
good luck

nah. sorry for the confusion. i test drove the car yesterday for a max of 10 min. until my boy comes over, we're gonna set the timing again. so that i feel 100% sure bout it. i jus noticed it smoking today tho. kinda like wen ur cookin something in a steam pot, and the smokes escapes the sides. thats how its smokin from the mani. / y pipe connection.

everything's been tightened? if so replace your gaskets and see how it is.

is the smoke something normal that will be consumed thru the xhaust system. or is this something more than jus having forgot to put o-ring gaskets in the exhaust manifold?

oh for the love of god..... It is normal to get some smoke through the exhaust its called combustion the natural byproduct is smoke of some kind. Replace the gaskets at the y pipe then run the car for a while t is not uncommon for there to be excess coolant or oil in the exhaust piping after having a headgasket fail it will burn off.

NO NO NO NO! if anything keep the timing in the center and a lil advance.. dont EVER pulled it all the way to one side or the other.. too retard then its gonna run like a slug, too advance and your gonna hear your motor knocking.. try to keep the distributor in the center and just a lil advance towards the firewall.. of 16 degress TDC (top dead center)? I forget was it 16 degress or 18? I beelive it was 16 degress..
