Here's what happened. I'm driving yesterday and all of a sudden the speedometer goes out. I'm like OK...then a few minutes later the rpm guage stops working. Also at this point my radio is cutting in and out. Car was still driving fine up til this point, but then when I would step on the gas it would hesitate badly...I could only keep a constant cruising speed. It gets worse and worse and I come up to a hill and my car dies on me.

So I get the car towed to a shop, and its getting checked out. Tow guy thinks its the alternator, which I think he's right. While at the shop i tried jumpstarting it because i had to close my windows. The car started up fine, but once the cables were removed and i gave it some gas it died right away.

What do you guys think? Also, about 2 days ago my power steering belt broke, so I've been driving around without it on. Would that effect the alternator in anyway? Are the 2 related somehow?

this is a 2000 si w/ <40K miles.

 

Sounds like the alternator to me. I doubt the powersteering would have any effect on it though. Probably just coincidental...
