I was reading that people who own the VX were getting inaccurate speed readings (MPH and Mileage) because they had to use 175/70 tires instead of 165/70, therefore making the odometer read less miles travelled. I've noticed that the SI, LX, DX, EX all have varying tire sizes and wheel sizes, which technically should make all the odometers inaccurate except one of them.

First I want to know if anyone knows how exactly the speed is calculated in the civic (meaning does the VSS go directly to the cluster and the cluster deciphers what the voltages mean?) or if there is something more to it.

According to that page, the cars use all the same sensors which can make sense but then makes you ask the question, how is the speed calibrated on all of the cars?

 

All of the cars you mentioned all have the same outer diameter (OD) sized tires, and if there is a difference it’s probably negligible.

 

Electric VSS should be the all same and the only difference is the mounting position between the AT & manual.

 

Where does the VSS on the Civics connect to? Where and how is that information interpreted and handled and then where is it sent from there? Is the VSS directly connected to the cluster? Does the odometer and speedometer read from the VSS?

 

It goes directly to the cluster and to the ECU, all the electronics is handled at the cluster.

 

I made this chart noting the different sizes in tires for the civics between 1992-2003 (also includes 2007 civic hybrid) and I was wondering, for the older civics, were their gauges really that inaccurate? Is the gauge cluster accounting for the different tire sizes or is it really that inaccurate on the older civics? The reason I made this is because I wanted to know if there were any larger sizes that would fit on older civics without screwing up the gauges accuracy.
