Default heat not working on 97 accord

i bought this car from a friend and the heat control isnt functional, i was told that the clip comes off the control on the inside, and its better to run the new cable with all that apart anyways, my question is, is this correct and how does the cluster cover come off without breaking it?

i just replaced my heater control unit on my 91 so im sure its slightly differnt but in my case the entire dash bezel had to come out.. my cable was rusted up from the flood we had here. car was full of water up to the steering column.. anyways, after lubricating the cable it started working again but i still had to replace the control unit due to one missing **** and having to use pliers on it all the time.. and it was so rounded i couldnt even use the pliers anymore lol...

The design of the '94 thru '97 Climate Control System leaves a lot to be desired.
It involves several items, all of which ultinmately conspire to make this system fail. this includes:
1) Control - ***** break, Cable Retainer breaks
2) Temp Cable (first) - runs from control head to heater temp door bellcrank
3) Temp Cable (Second) - runs from heater temp door bellcrank to hot water control valve.
4) Hot Water Control Valve - Firewall mounted - often binds with age from corrosion.

What can happen is (ultimately) one of the control cables' inner cable bends from working against either a binding temp door or a frozen Hot Water Control valve.
Usually the repair requires both cables, a Hot Water Control Valve and a control ****.

I'll try to find the dash R&R instructions for you.
